I was always afraid I *would*, so I steered clear of opiates.

My preference back in the day was on the other side of the fence, rather
than stupor producing substances. Years ago my dentist would prescribe
oxycontin or similar stuff after an extraction or root canal. I still have
them, saved for a very rainy day. Those days are over. The day after hip
surgery they offered Tylenol. That never did much for me so I passed.

Right. That's part of what I mean by "the anti-s are destroying it from
the inside". Note also that the common objection used by anti-s that it
costs more to execute someone than it does to keep them in prison for life
is:
    a) Doubtful. As with many stats used for rhetorical purposes, it is
probably very cherry-picked and twisted stats to make a point.
and
    b) Only true (if it is) because of all the silly (and, unfortunately,
required by law) appeals that do little except keep lawyers employed.

Well, a truly 'fascist' govt would have

I seem to recall that someone survived, and as his sentence has been
fulfilled, he was freed. Can not find a reference.

In none of the cases I read there say that the person was freed.

What I read somewhere was something like the sentence specifying the
prisoner was sentenced to a current of so many volts applied this way,
for such time, etc. The prisoner survived, but the sentence had been
fulfilled, even if he was alive. Thus, he was freed.

Just flood 'em with nitrogen - they'll pass out
almost immediately and be dead dead in about
five minutes. Something like that happened with
NASA some years back, several engineers walked
into a tunnel that'd been purged with nitrogen.
Dropped dead, no muss, no fuss.

If you wanna be double sure, add 5% carbon
   monoxide to the nitrogen.

Some view executions as 'justice', others
as 'revenge', others as a big 'deterrent'.
It's kind of all of those combined. The
perps must NEVER think they can get away
with it or all hell breaks loose.

Hmm, notice the huge uptick in 'Killer Mom'
news stories in the past month ? Just sayin'

It's also been claimed that executions cut way down
on recidivism, but I have not seen any firm statistics
to substantiate that claim.

I believe it would be appropriate to conduct public
executions of politicians and other public servants
who violate the Constitution or other aspects of
their oath of office. Just saying.

But wouldn’t that be in contradiction to the principle that those of
subnormal mental faculties cannot be held fully responsible for their
own actions?

Eliminating morons from the gene pool is beneficial.

"Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Buck v. Bell, 274 U.S. 200 (1927)

How far we've fallen in 100 years. Now imbeciles are nurtured, given cash
rewards for producing little imbeciles, and forgiven when they rape and
murder because they don't know any better.

   Heh heh ! :-)

Rather too many pols ARE absolute idiots - just
oddly blessed with the ability to persuade others.
Tune into CSPAN or other US television that shows
congressional/etc events live. Oh, WOW !

Plato wasn't entirely wrong about 'democracy'.
Our fix-ups, well, didn't fix everything.

   But, I'll still note Churchill's observation :
" ... democracy is the worst form of Government,
except for all those other forms that have been
   tried from time to time."

We can, HAVE, done much MUCH worse.

I do sense a lot confuse 'justice' and 'revenge'.

The one thing you missed is that you assume the perps really are not
being wrongfully charged. Miscarriages of justice tend to be harder to
try to amend in the presence of capital punishment.

There once was a US First Lady by the name of Eleanor Roosevelt... maybe
it'd be smart to live by some of her work.

And so few people think of 'expediency'...

It takes the guys off the streets...

Capital punishment does it permanently at potentially lower cost.

Transportation was good. Poor and so stealing? Bugger off to Oz or
Murica and make something of yerself.

The African chiefs did the same thing, Take the useless and make a bob
or two selling them as slaves

I suspect fentanyl is simply too nice

One anaesthetist put me under with it. Great warm whoosh and I was gone...
