https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GXTCSJY6/ What makes this one interesting, at that price, is it has the eight-thread CPU with 16 GB RAM 512 GB SSD. Best deal I've seen, to date. -- Joel W. Crump Zyprexa - It's not just for schizophrenics, anymore!

The funny thing, though, is that your box lacking an NVMe drive is probably slower than the mini PC. -- Joel W. Crump Zyprexa - It's not just for schizophrenics, anymore!

Had a customer that made the point that he could buy computer much cheaper then the ones I recommended. I bought a Lenovo Tiny and got the cheapest data drive they offered, which was a laptop spinning drive. The machine ran like cap. And whatever money he saved was lost through the times he had me work on it and I had to wait and wait and wait for things to happen whilst my meter ran and ran and ran. Yup. He sure showed me!

UNDER-buy and, yea, you'll suffer. But OVER-buy and you'll PAY - rather a lot these days. Would NOT rec an iN-xxxx box as a company server. However for HOME uses they can be quite adequate AND affordable (ok, USED to be affordable, we may have to wait awhile). Anyway, GOT mine just before the tariff wars. They'll hold me for years. One even serves as a mini home NAS. WiFi connections anyway so the speed of the box is greater than that of the connections regardless. No, NOT gonna string Cat-6+ wires all over my ceiling. At my age and condition wouldn't DARE get on a tall ladder anyway ! LAST time I dared, almost lost it ... but DID think to put my cell on the floor near where I'd likely crash. A 4-unit USB tower, a couple M.2/USB dongles and a couple old 4tb magnetics in USB boxes ... more than enough storage and 'fast enough' for home uses. The mini-box has its own SATA-SSD too. CAN'T seem to get SAMBA working right these days alas, seems to want locations and usernames/permissions I don't want to create ... had to use NFS. SAMBA used to be 'easier' and has a lot more tweaks/security than NFS. At my old office, bought a 'Synology' NAS unit. They're Linux under the hood ... just keep custom shit OUT of the main system dirs or it'll get erased on updates. Lots of good stuff with those units - and CAN sync with other units. Oh, current realities, MIGHT have secret spyware ... beware ... pre-encrypt. Funnest bit was getting an external USB drive for 3rd-tier backups to mount when desired and then unmount. It was like USB dev #87 or something. ARE utils that can force disconnection AND reconnection on demand. Hey, if it's not mounted THEY are gonna have a really HARD time finding it .... never make it TOO EASY .......

But you can fix that, and I bet such a customer could also fix that if he wanted (cloning over, isn't that hard to do). It's when the machines have too much stuff soldered down, and say that eMMC they soldered in there isn't a prince, that can mean throwing the machine in the trash. Those hurt more. If you have a machine tiny enough for a gutless eMMC and no option storage, those have "Trash" written on the lid. If a machine is big enough to have a 2.5" drive, then the machine is repair-able. Then it depends on whether it is screw assembled, or needs various amounts of spudger work to get into it, whether such improvements happen. I suppose we could always do as one poster did when his machine needed a new CMOS battery, and he used a hole saw to dead reckon and drilled a hole where the CMOS would be. Talk about dangerous. That's drilling a big hole in laptop plastic. I noticed on the Test Machine, when I switched from plain HDD to RST RAID mirror HDD, I was getting a better response from storage, suggesting there was a RAM cache at work there, making things better (the seek time seemed better than is possible via the "best" drive responding first). It doesn't give NVMe speeds, but what it does do, is makes things like Windows Update run a tiny bit faster. But that's a bit more nasty bit of work to set up (I may have needed to drop to Safe Mode to get the driver to pick up or something, and I have had Inaccessible Boot Device scenarios that required me to back out of my sequence and "try again"). I think my computer store still stocks Lexar 2.5" drives at reasonable prices (compared to the rate that the prices of the others have gone up), but my experience is that those are TLC and they seem to get mushy after three months. You don't get 500MB/sec reads out of those. I have a handful of those, and they're always scary as in "maybe I should make a backup of that". They don't inspire confidence. And I don't know how far they can be pushed, before the first CRC error shows up (error corrector overwhelmed). Paul

Up the memory from 4 GB and install an NVMe drive. Clonezilla to three rescue. But not when the customer know better than you and is proud you show in you up. And his buns squeak when he walks because he is so cheap. I have a used mini from Ebay that came without a drive. I put in my own NVMe drive and it works beautifully! So you are correct, it is doable.

The current - ok 2-years-ago - mini-boxes from BMax and BeeLink were pretty damned good AND affordable. You could buy most any strength CPU and mem you wanted. I bought four of the "ok laptop"-power ones. Nuked Winders and put in Linux ... big boost in performance. These have served me very well for a couple of years now, and may HAVE to for a couple more given current market realities. If you are not a 'gamer', just need the Basic Shit, then these units will serve VERY well for minimal cash output. Even have an 'NAS' built on one ... VBox with two alt systems on another, Simple vid streaming on another. One unit in reserve still. When, if, the trade wars diminish and AI sucking up all the RAM in the world ends ... expect good deals again. DO have a decent desktop. Installed it, never really used it for anything after. No need. I note some Winders groups in the headers. I started with computers even before the 'modern' era - PDP-11s and that neat-o newfangled 'C' language, punch cards with FORTRAN. DOS/Win started simply ... but it seems they NEVER dumped the JUNK anywhere along the way. It has built up and up and up. Oh, and the SPYware ... wow ! M$ calls it something else, of course. In short it has become an ultra-obese diabetic CRAP system that uses up ten times as much space/CPU as actually needed to Get Things Done. As soon as practical I shifted all my office servers, and a few workstations, to Linux. Much leaner and meaner and more reasonable. You can Get It Done at a fraction of the power. "Weak" boards become "strong". Last guy who understood Linux ... management drove him away. He was supposed to be my replacement. Retired six months afterwards. The new guy could not write a six line Python script - but WAS good at M$ "solutions" ... so ... whatever ... they will be good until Vlad/Xi attack. Then, ALL Gone. I get my pension check regardless. Kinda sad though. Note POLITICS ... vest with M$ or Apple and WHEN things go all to hell you can BLAME it on THEM, not yourself. This approach is a modern favorite, BUTT-COVERING rather than competence. Would have liked to shift ALL workstations to Linux, but, well, seems 90-plus percent just can't COPE with the computing concepts or software that's not 95% bells and whistles and neat-o graphics. Had to carry them on my back for decades. Hmmm ... long LONG back, first 386 chips, we DID check into Unix ... paid good money for SCO ... but there just wasn't enough software anyone but guru's could cope with alas. Sorry, cannot restrict potential functional employees to one percent of the pop. MOST people just don't GET computers. Not how they're wired. Doesn't mean they are stupid ... just "not wired for it". This truth is something We sometimes seem to forget. Not everybody, indeed not MOST everybody, are 'computer people'. "Simple" for Us ... totally opaque for almost everyone else. Hey, hit me with advanced math - totally opaque - but I CAN do computer logic easily, down to the CPU register level if needed. Lots of experience with micro-controllers. WANT to learn micro-controllers ... suggest Arduinos, PICs and maybe PI Picos. Seriously low-level.

Gave it and most of my computer related stuff to a high school teacher who was trying to start a computer course when I left New Hampshire in '88, so UM was only a little behind the times. I think they dropped the microcomputer lab entirely by 2000. I'd sniffed around the program thinking I might go back for a real live CS degree and saw nothing worthwhile.

The kit sort of looked like a Book which you opened and had a circuit board on each side .... allowing plenty of expansion slots. The BBC was more or less the customer that was going to take the first ARM chips IIRC. The 'educational' aspect of small cheap computers and the people involved was I think something that may well have transitioned into the raspberry Pi. Its all about Cambridge, UK The Broadcom BCM2835 system-on-chip core technology was principally developed in Cambridge, England, originating from Alphamosaic—a Cambridge-based multimedia processor startup acquired by Broadcom in 2004. And that was the chipset that the Raspberry PI first used. Following the acquisition, Broadcom maintained an R&D team on the Cambridge Science Park, where key figures like future Raspberry Pi co-creator Eben Upton worked on adapting the silicon package. Raspberry PI HQ is in Cambridge. Rather like the original INTEL and Motorola spawned other companies via ex employees, Acorn/ARM has somewhat done the same with several companies like Cambridge silicon radio (original Bluetooth chipsets) and Alphamosaic as well as ARM itself being snapped up by large multinationals. And when that happens, the core geniuses move on and start something else :-) Hence Raspberry Pi foundation. originally cheap and for educational purposes now rather expensive and being used by OEMs -- “Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” H.L. I'm pretty sure the kit you describe - opened like a book, Z80-based - wasn't Beeb-related; I've followed the Beeb for 60-odd years, especially anything to do with technology. They got into computers with the BBC computer series - 1970s/'80s or so - with, I think, government backing; (state) schools definitely were encouraged to buy those. 6502-based. (I think the Master used a later - 6512 maybe?) I think they more or less dropped out of computers as such - certainly with any sort of educational tie-in - until, and I'm not sure about that, the Raspberry Pi machines appeared. (As another here has said, originally cheap and intended for education, and now spoilt for those purposes.) >> >> At other times, I had learnt programming for Intel 8085 and Motorola >> 6809 CPU's My first assembly-language experience - with a commercial microprocessor, anyway - was with the 6800, using kits from SWTPC - southwestern testicles, sorry, technical products corporation, that my (not state) school bought. (Well, entirely under the one man.) I qualify about the commercial microprocessor, because the _first_ programming I did was on a machine (also built by that one man) of strange design - serial, 7-bit, and used ones-complement arithmetic rather than the usual twos. 16 (no, not 16K, 16) memory locations. 3 bit (so 8 word) instruction set. Panel full of filament bulbs - looked like everyone's _idea_ of a computer. >> >> Variety is the Spice of Life!! > > Z80. 6809, 8086 were what I cut my teeth on. I later got into specialist digital signal processing - initially bit-slice processing (2901 and associated chips), where we designed our own processors (the 2901 was 4 bits, but designed to be expanded width-wise - our design was 12 bit). Later, 56000 and 96000 - eventually massive multiprocessing, 4 96000s per card, 13 cards a sub-rack, 3 sub-racks in the final rack; the initial application was vibration control for marine engines, using active mounts. > > After that, C and who cared what the processor was? With no OS and no tools on the first computers, we used a programming card and a pencil, to generate binary to run on the machine. There was no assembler program waiting for us to use. You had to work out all your branch addresses your own self. And you did not totally have to "get computers", because the environment was so simple back then. No CPU caches (didn't have to turn caches on), no virtual addresses (no mapping necessary), no Ring3 and Ring0, all hardware accessible. All you had to verify, was the starting vector address, and that your SRAM for the program, showed up at such an address. You had to make sure when the CPU did jump off to that start address, your program was the first thing it executed. Simple, really, compared to getting the 747 of today, airborne. Paul
