Certainly. Can hardly use a bank without one. Many things need getting a
code in the smartphone, like for instance the house alarm.

Don't install that kind of house alarm.

Also, all phones should have a positive OFF
switch - cuts them off 100% - no sneaky
spying or pinging or secret mic activation.

All use similar systems, or are crap.

Here an alarm system that just sounds is basically forbidden. They must
actively warn the user or the police, via phone or something, and must
disable the sound automatically. Can not hound the siren all night till
someone comes.

Must be remotely controlled.

I'm certain that my phone when off is actually off.

I volunteer to walk dogs at animal services. There is an outdoor kennel
behind the building, surrounded by a 8' high chain link fence with 6' high
plywood panels concealing the interior. There is a 'Protected by
Interstate Security' sign on the plywood that amuses me. I've only seen
the top of the resident's head as he tries to jump the fence so all I know
is he's big, black, and does not have a pleasant disposition. I figure
Interstate has nothing on the hound of the Baskervilles.

One advantage of the K9, is that the be-bearded 'religion of piss'
people consider him utterly 'haram' and will run a mile to avoid contact.

And you can't prosecute a dog for 'racism'

That would be a wise choice in this case. Most of the dogs I walk like to
sniff around the joints in the plywood to wind him up but a couple prefer
to pass by very rapidly. I don't know his status but he's not on the
'adoptable' web page.

Build your own ... if you have the
   electronics skills. A damned Arduino
Uno with a relay shield or so can
make a really good alarm system with
very little code. A Pi-3 with a couple
of add-on boards, even better AND can

   Don't be so SURE.

Most cells are never REALLY off ... the GPS unit
keeps recording, 'pings' are still done. The
only fix is to pull the battery (which I've done
on occasion). Easier with flips than 'smart'phones.
There's always the aluminum/Mu foil BAG trick too.

I'm proposing a very solid OFF switch, disconnects
everything but the charger circuit - maybe EVEN
the charger in some cases. "NO" should mean "NO".

I have, but the law states that an alarm system must be controlled 24/7
by some organization that can forward alarms to the police.

It is actually useful.

I have suffered some shop alarm hounding in the deep of the night, non
stop. The police came, had a hard time shutting it off. Happened more
than once to the same shop.

Might be an EU regulation about it.

Nope. The GPS system uses significant battery. There are *some* phones
that keep a tracking system while off, but it is based on low power
bluetooth. It is a well known system, and the phone docs reports this as
a feature. *NOT hidden*.

Drop the aluminium foil hat.

The last time I renewed my vehicle registration you signed in at a kiosk
and you were notified when a clerk was ready by a text message to your
phone. There was a provision for people without a phone but I don't know
how well it worked.

I hadn't went in physically for years but when they sent the new plates
they failed to include the stickers with the expiration month and date.

Found myself in a situation once where I could NOT

I have a AT&T long distance service I haven't used in years. Trying to
cancel it is so difficult I've resigned myself to paying the $14 / month.
One of these days when I'm feeling exceeding patient.

I'm fortunate that my telco has actual shops in the mall and the
employees can actually solve my problems. Often they do something in a
computer and has to be approved at headquarters, but it works.

They also have a webforum, where I can request things in writing. It is
slow, but reliable.

Verizon has several locations including the mall. I was pleasantly
surprised when I went in to cancel my service that it took about 5 minutes
with no attempt to sell me something else. I'd had no problems with
Verizon but I'm far enough from a tower that 5G is never going to come
close to StarLink's 100 Mbps cheap plan.

I can block a corp just with a click on the ban web page. Ok, I probably
have to confirm a code in the phone.

Having the numbers is not enough, in theory at least they need a paper
with a signed authorization. Depends on the bank, it is easier to manage
the auth or not.

There is a period after an invoice has been paid while we can still
cancel it at the bank.

I recently switched from AT&T Wireless to T-Mobile to get on the same
account as my wife. Mainly to get her moved from the super-deluxe
$113/month plan to the $80/month for two senior discount plan. But it
turns out that TMOs signal inside my house is much weaker than ATTs. And
at my business office on the other side of town, it is even weaker: I
have to go outside to make a call. But the latter building has an
excuse: It has aluminum sheathed outside walls. I will have to ask them
why WiFi calling does not alleviate the problem.

Obviously, that is why. One could hope that competition might
counterbalance that, but it does not seem to be working.

With my RF hat on, this is obviously multipath interference, either from
reflections or (less likely) from overlapping coverage from two access
points. The best solution is to use a "Distributed Antenna System": Two
or more access points that coordinate with each other over a wired
network. Then you can place a subsidiary access point much closer to the
outlying spot. I have such a system at my house in order to get a good
signal in the garage that my wife had considered using for an art
studio. Note that if the wired path goes outdoors, you should use a
cable labeled as "Outdoor direct burial gel-filled UV-resistant cat 6
cable", such as this:

You can probably get a much better connection by giving this "analog
terminal adapter" a good external directional antenna on a roof or a
pole with a less obstructed path and then putting the adapter in a NEMA
box next to it. In an area like your, there really should be RF tech
firms that can do this kind of work competently. But the state's PUC
should also have a regulation that make the "Incumbent Local Exchange
Carrier" (ILEC, for short) obligated to provide a reliably working
solution for voice calls when they stop providing the 48V powered POTS
lines.

No, those were 1200 or 2400 bps synchronous lines.
I was there in the 1970s.

T-Mobile has a slightly better rep than ATT/Verizon.

However, really, they're ALL using the exact same
antennas. Bad ATT signal, bad tmobile/verizon signal.

Still looking to buy an actual 'smartphone', just
in case. Expect it to sit on a shelf 99.9% of the
time. One of the medium-priced Samsung 'A' series,
A-37 is well reviewed, look to be what I need. THINK
I'm gonna get it thru "Consumer Cellular" - alt provider -
good prices and ASSUME you're older so you won't be
   using megatons of data.

Where I am ... no, NOBODY is gonna pick up the old
wired connections. ATT would not even fix my old
wired ... didn't ring anymore. HAD to go to the
wireless half-assed solution. That's that. Gonna
have to buy a bigger UPS to keep it going even if
the power goes down for awhile.

On the plus, price IS cheaper than the old wired
connection - can AFFORD a UPS and such.

NOW gotta brave the 'customer service' mess to
make sure the old wired acct is dead, AND fix
the e-mail address the Hindi tech got wrong.
I will not really BLAME him ... letters DO
sound different to different cultures ... it's
like Cantonese speakers and the letter "L",
"L" and "R" really sound the same to them.
DID get all the OTHER shit set like I want
   for this 'phone' though.

The higher the freq the worse ... acts more and
more like "light". My more distant devices are
all set to use 2.4 ... better range/fidelity.
But, even then, a few inches can make a difference.

Umm ... nothing on 'roofs' here. On shelves.
Way too old for ladders now anyhow, I'd fall
   to my doom.

   Main fix for out-buildings, a cheap REPEATER/
EXTENDER. Not too hard to set up. Works.

I did have some experience with 110 baud devices
in the pre-PC days. Hey, they seemed like magic
   back then ! :-)

Loads of experience with 300 baud connections.
