Depends... was not messy when my father died, then later my mother. I
was there to do what was required. Problem is when there is no one to do
to it.

Yeah, I have a problem with the 'notify in case of emergency' box on
forms. I sometimes put my ex although there's nothing she could do anyway.
I suppose I should do the will thing one of these days.

My alma mater, RPI, has been enshitified to the point there's no chance of
them getting a dime. More likely there will be some very happy dogs and
cats.

If you feel it necessary - and sometimes it is.

Do check if there are some state/local colleges
somewhere near that haven't gone all ultracommie.
I'd even consider a good trade school ... they
are mostly dead practical, no politics ... but
sci/tech is still my top pref.

The local university borders on useless. I don't know much about Montana
Tech in Butte but it started out as the Montana School of Mines and I
think tends towards red necks.

Montana State in Bozeman probably is the best of the breed.

The last time I looked RPI was betting the farm on video games.

https://news.rpi.edu/content/2018/06/26/rensselaer-game-design-program-

They even thought they could revitalize Troy with gaming companies. The
last time I was in Troy was 2004 and it could best be revitalized with
bulldozers to finish the half assed, unfinished urban renewal of the '80s.
It never was a kinder, gentler place but I was really missing my .45.

Get another .45 ... ya never know.

Once again you have no fucking clue about my politics. You're the one that

Troy NY isn't the midwest although it certainly is rust belt.

Industries that have found cheaper labour or become irrelevant are
inevitably doomed. I dont see many blacksmiths around either.

Its like the 'save our high streets' cry in the UK

We don't need high streets (or malls) any more. We can get it all
cheaper and easier on Amazon.

What we need is nice places to live. All those shops have flats above
them that are simply too expensive to rent, because the owners are
paying business taxes on businesses that have just closed.

What you need is cafes, a few fresh food shops, and residents living on
the high street.

The market town is dead, but the residential community broadbanded up to
the gills is the new reality

But not a single politician has realised this

Post Industrial towns are now Islamic ghettoes because no one else wants
to live there.

No one has a clue. But it doesn't stop them shouting about 'left against
right' the latest moral panic, or some existential crisis in something
that simply doesn't matter

   But not for YOU :-)

I'll let my few remaining, distant, relatives
   fight it out afterwards.

They're NOT gonna like dealing with my house

SOME entities in the USA do that, others do not.

I don't LIKE direct withdrawal, one bad actor gets
the correct numbers/auth and they can drain you
dry in moments. USA has legal protections for
credit cards, but not direct withdrawals.

Also often hard to CUT OFF companies once they
get direct access. I did that once with CompuServe,
had to go to a bank and and have 'em explicitly
block the corp. CS shreiked and shreiked.

Except for that little punk in Romania on Vlad's
   perk program ......

They missed my favourite preventive step: Don't use a smartphone.

   Works ! :-)

Never had one, but MAY have to get one - preferably
a cheap one - Just In Case. NOT thru my main carrier
though, gotta have more than one basket.

IdiotPhones have, obviously, become THE major target
for Vlad's little geek army. Promise them free beer
and teeny-bopper hookers and they'll work themselves
   to death.

Note the mentioned article didn't really say OTHERS
had figured out this hack. RedHat may have made the
nuts-n-bolts itself, proven it WAS possible. It'll
be fixed in the next update ... and then enemy AI
will create several near-alts next month ......

It's not always an option. In China, if you want to buy anything, you
need a smartphone. In France, you can avoid a smartphone, but you will
avoid a lot of things which require a smartphone. And it looks like it
will become more and more mandatory.
