I was outside talking to some guys clearing up dead trees for me just now. A buzzard perched in a dead willow, took a look and decided we hadn't turned up any carrion and went. I wondered where the birdsong had gone.... -- Gun Control: The law that ensures that only criminals have guns.

A dead deer by the side of the road in August isn't very pleasant when you're on a bike.

Differentiation is difficult but where I am has mostly ravens. I'm not a birder but from observation they seem to be more solitary except for breeding pairs. I have seen murders of crows in the city. That may have to do with the food supply. Other than back yard gardens the only crop in this area is hay and there are no native nut trees. Non- native hardwood species have been planted in the city but for some reason they are mostly maples with a few chestnuts. Also there is competition from hawks, eagles, and the magpies.

Anyways, the 'big' thing here is now Wolves Those are sort of a protected (fault of the greens) species here. Some have attacked kids, many have killed cattle. Politicians here are now talking about easing the rules to shoot wolves. I have not seen any wolves in the garden yet here. However the yearly scores are Humans: 275 Wolves 0. The closest to an attack was when some idiots shot an elk and decided to go back the next day to butcher it. There was a brief discussion with a wolf pack that took possession and the hunters fled. According to them it was a horrible ordeal being pursued back to their vehicle. I think a wolf growled and they ran like hell. We'll never know. Even the mountain lions managed to bag a 5 year old in '89. A Grizzly got one this spring but the last time they scored was '98. Personally I worry more about moose than wolves, bears, and lions.

Most people seem to think mountain lions are just big pussy cats and they certainly don't seem ferocious like other big cats are. I cant remember off hand which big cat is the worst. Tigers in India could become man eaters, but only as a last resort Google implies leopards and their melanistic variant, panthers are the most human unfriendly along with tigers and lions -- Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. I had one occurrence where I was sitting on a log admiring the view and I had a feeling something was watching me. I turned around and the cat was about 100' away. I was armed with trekking poles and a Kabar knife I was using to brush out the trail. I yelled and waved the poles but the cat wasn't impressed but he wasn't aggressive either. He finally went over to a little stand of trees and did a good impression of an annoyed house cat, crouched down with a twitching tail. I've met others but not as close. We ware aware of each other but no aggressive behavior by the cat. To anthropomorphize, the cat recognized another apex predator, tipped his hat, and went on his way. The problem is when people fit the profile of fleeing game, for example the 5 year old, joggers, or bicyclists. I did encounter a bobcat that I thought was measuring me up for a meal but not the big cats.

Fish & Wildlife has a delicate balancing act. When the lion population increases more people notice them and start complaining. Then the season is opened or made longer until enough are culled. They're hunted with hounds and there aren't that many lion hunters so there is some control. The problem is the lions keep the elks in check. Too few lions means too many elk. That makes the elk hunters happy but then the ranchers get upset with the elk eating the hay meant for cattle. Fences don't work very well. I've seen evidence that an elk walked through an electric fence and dragged the wire with him to get to some fresh alfalfa. I always forget which way it goes so https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk Moose are another kettle of fish. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose People think it's strange when I say I worry more about moose than bears, wolves, and lions but to quote wiki "Moose are not typically aggressive towards humans, but will be aggressive when provoked or frightened. Moose attack more people than bears and wolves combined, but usually with only minor consequences. Moose injure more people than any other wild mammal; worldwide, only hippopotamuses injure more." Bull moose have been known to charge oncoming trains.

In Africa the most lethal animal is the Hippo. A Humvee sized animal capable of 30mph on land and not interested in anyone getting between it and the water. The crocodiles leave them alone and vice versa. Big cats simply stay away from humans if they can. -- “it should be clear by now to everyone that activist environmentalism (or environmental activism) is becoming a general ideology about humans, about their freedom, about the relationship between the individual and the state, and about the manipulation of people under the guise of a 'noble' idea. It is not an honest pursuit of 'sustainable development,' a matter of elementary environmental protection, or a search for rational mechanisms designed to achieve a healthy environment. Yet things do occur that make you shake your head and remind yourself that you live neither in Joseph Stalin’s Communist era, nor in the Orwellian utopia of 1984.” Vaclav Klaus

Stubborn thing, keeps walking on the tracks. If it were a dog, you'd
think he wants you to follow him where his owner is held by a hunter's
trap! :-D
