Yes, the use of the top one is something I hadn't seen before, but it certainly works. Lot of heat for not much power, and You would get more out of e.g. a single EL34 with a transformer. Or a pair. Back in the day transformers were cheap. Today they are sadly not. The output transformer is probably at least half the component cost of a valve amplifier... -- I was brought up to believe that you should never give offence if you can avoid it; the new culture tells us you should always take offence if you can. Yes, far too small and light for the power - because with modern transistors, class D dissipates hardly any (waste, heating) power in the output transistors, so needs hardly any heatsinking, which is much of the weight in a transistor amplifier. The drawing with two anodes of different sizes confuses me.

Both those tube you mention have 2 anodes and one cathode,
each are used as 2 diodes to make 347 V from two opposite phase transformer
outputs, to give a power line with less ripple (100 Hz versus a 50 Hz ripple
or 120 Hz versus 60 Hz in 'merryca, as in case of one diode,
that way needing less supply filtering, allows smaller filter capacitors to be
used,

It is a schematic diagram shows how the 'tubes' are connected.
You need some electronics expericne to understand thsoe circuit.

I am an electronics engineer :-)
What I don't understand is why the two anodes have different sizes.

Even though the two anodes are symmetric and arranged cross-shaped inside the glass radio tube envelope. Pin 1 and Pin 7 are the two anodes. Pin 3 is the cathode. One anode symbol is larger than the other. Is this vacuum tube symbol in the schematic, inherited from a previous badly behaved rectifier tube it replaces ? As there seem to be symbols available in other schematics, where the anode symbols are the same size. The only reason this matters to an observer, is sometimes these symbols are a warning, about some characteristic to be observed while designing with the device. *************************** CoPilot answer *************************** The short answer: **No—there is no evidence that the asymmetric EZ80 symbol is inherited from a misbehaving predecessor.** The asymmetry is a *drafting convention*, not a warning about tube behavior. Both anodes in the EZ80 are physically and electrically identical. ( https://r-type.org/exhib/adg0001.htm ) --- ### What the sources actually show - The Valve Museum explicitly states: **“The two anodes are identical.”** ( https://r-type.org/exhib/adg0001.htm ) This confirms that the device itself has no internal asymmetry that would justify a warning symbol. - Historical symbol references (James Ollinger’s overview) explain that **vacuum‑tube schematic symbols evolved by convention**, not by strict standardization. Engineers often drew elements in ways that were visually convenient, even if not physically accurate. ( https://www.jollinger.com/radio/tubes/tube_schematic_symbols.html ) - Early rectifier tubes (e.g., Type 80, UX213) did have varied symbol styles, but **none of the authoritative historical sources describe an asymmetric plate symbol used as a warning** or carried forward into later tubes. ( https://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_80.html ) --- ### Why the EZ80 symbol sometimes looks asymmetric The asymmetry you’ve seen - one plate drawn larger or differently shaped is almost certainly due to **draftsman shorthand**: - In many schematic styles, the two plates of a full-wave rectifier are drawn offset or with different lengths simply to make the wiring clearer. - Some draftsmen drew one plate "dominant" to indicate which side of the transformer winding it connected to, but this was **not a standardized practice** and **not a functional warning**. - Other schematics draw both plates identically, which aligns with the actual tube structure. (You’ve noticed these too.) This variability is exactly what Ollinger notes: tube symbols "are conventions - varied and complicated ... and changed over the years.” ( https://www.jollinger.com/radio/tubes/tube_schematic_symbols.html ) --- ### Is it inherited from a badly behaved predecessor? There *were* earlier rectifier tubes with quirks—high forward drop, heater-cathode leakage, surge sensitivity—but **none of the historical documentation indicates that their schematic symbols encoded these issues** or that EZ80 inherited any symbolic warning from them. The EZ80’s predecessors (EZ40, AZ41, GZ40, etc.) are listed in Radiomuseum’s lineage, but no asymmetric plate symbol convention is mentioned. ( https://www.radiomuseum.org/tubes/tube_ez80.html ) --- ### So what does the asymmetric symbol *mean*? **Nothing electrical.** It’s not a warning about imbalance, surge behavior, preferred orientation, or transformer phasing. It’s simply: - A drafting artifact - A visual simplification - A way to avoid clutter in crowded schematics - A non‑standardized symbol that varies by publication, country, and era --- ### If you’re designing with the EZ80 There are **no special characteristics** associated with one anode versus the other. Both plates have identical ratings and identical surge behavior. The datasheet and museum sources confirm this. ( https://r-type.org/exhib/adg0001.htm ) The only real design cautions for the EZ80 are: - Series resistance to limit surge current - Maximum reservoir capacitor size - Heater-cathode insulation limits None of these relate to plate asymmetry. --- ### Follow-up question for you Do you want a breakdown of **how different schematic styles represent dual-anode rectifiers** (European vs. American vs. British drafting conventions)? I can map out the symbol families and show where the asymmetric versions come from. *************************** End: CoPilot answer *************************** Given that follow-up question at the end there, it's possible this is a country specific convention. My draftsman at work (in an era when they still had such things), was a stickler for the conventions, which is a minor annoyance, but was his job. The reason we're noting this, is if you look at the number of symbols and their conventions, "everything has a reason". It's not often someone would do that just as a "styling". Paul

None. Not in college, either. Only had technical readings before that.
And some experimenting on my own.

Yes, in the drawings. It may be Orcad, looks like it.

The drawing here is what I would expect.

The drawing appears to have been done with CAD, probably Orcad, because
it has its appeareance. Components like valves are taken from a library.
The engineer uses the program, just using the existing components,
designed by the software company, and some times locally.
I wonder what was the intention of the designer when creating that
library. It surprised me a lot. Had I been in charge, I would have used
the library editor and changed that plate.
