Note that different carriers may use different operating systems, even with flips. Mine, had to buy one that HAD the needed system on it.

The SIM doesn't care about that, as far as the software and hardware is fully compliant with the relevant part of the specs; the kind of software that's relevant for the SIM is in the SIM itself. -- Nuno Silva

You are responding to SOL, our human hallucinator. He likely had to buy a different flip phone for a new carrier due to one or more of: old flip did not have a sim card slot, or old flip did not have the correct radios to talk to new carriers bands. But as he hallucinates his own, wrong, reasoning for why, he hallucinated it was because of the OS. But if the old and new flip phones have sim card slots where you can change out the sim cards, then moving to the new phone (presuming new phone has radios that can receive the carrier's transimssions) is supposed to just be moving the old sim to the new phone. That's the *entire* point of the sim cards. They are what link a phone number to a carrier, making the phone hardware "carrier" agnostic (beyond that pesky "does it have the right radio transceivers" aspect).

Ah ... yet another know-it-all better-than-you ... :-) Note buying all-new phones - and there aren't always compatible/equiv versions - is a pain in the ass. Avoid if at all possible. > But if the old and new flip phones have sim card slots where you can > change out the sim cards, then moving to the new phone (presuming new > phone has radios that can receive the carrier's transimssions) is > supposed to just be moving the old sim to the new phone. The SIM card is just the phone's "ID CARD". Has nothing to do with the built-in OS and won't get you from there to here. > That's the *entire* point of the sim cards. WAY too little 'standardization' in phones. Suspect it's all very very intentional. GOUGE the peasants !

It'd take some research - and the answers might not be easy to find. Seems like contractors put up big cell towers - but with "generic" hardware. Then all companies actually use the SAME antennas no matter the official brand. I would not really expect a better signal from ATT/T-Mobile/Verizon at all except by random chance. As for cheap cell ... try Consumer Cellular. NOT many physical stores though. MIGHT go out of biz in a few years too, many carriers have. There is a persistent 'old folks' phone called "JitterBugs". They piggyback on the others, but HAVE been in biz for a LONG time now. Low prices but not much data. Now have 'smart'phones too. But, as a spare/emergency phone, might be worth investigating. Oh ... my wunnerful new fake-hardline ... SEVEN incoming calls. THREE from "Dynata" and the others from numbers I tracked down as political-survey agents like Dynata. The generic "Please Leave A Message At The Tone" message and they all disconnect immediately :-)

ATT has 'variable' service, sometimes sucks, sometimes you get exactly who you need pretty quick. There's really no such thing as a "Republican", it is a coalition of somewhat different-thinking factions. This is why Dems still sometimes win, because the commies act more as a unit.

And there is the problem... Cotton, a supposed Republican, is trying to derail the DST act so Arkansas school kids won't have to go to school in the dark. Thune has managed to insure Senate does nothing. Snow and Murkowski are obstructionists. Even Trump realized his Supreme Court picks were a mistake. Johnson is no prize. I don't know about the Republican Senate candidate in this state after the bait'n'switch Daines pulled. My theory, FWIW, is that post ware there wre more resources than people and it was easy to give people a temporary thrill by delivering more 'stuff' to them on a yearly basis "Clever science man say shiny new thing make everything better" as the Daily Mash put it. Borrowing money to mine and process more stuff and build mor factories to turn it into cheap plasticky shit also made more sense., Then stuff happened. Stuff started to run out. Instead of lending to business, banks started lending to people. The wold became a juggler spinning plates and hoping that more and more people would come along and pay off the debt their parents took out..but their parents stopped having kids. Buying shiny new stuff much more fund than parenting. Panic. No more people to feed the Ponzi scheme. Lets import immigrants in millions. Oh bugger. No land, no houses, and they all want to turn their mew home into a shithole like where they just left. And here we are. Consumer society is dying, the borrow and spend societies ate teetering on economic collapse and the economics they teach is either 50 years out of date if its 'right wing' or 100 years out of date if its vaguely Marxist. So people are looking for any tosser who appears confident and who says 'he'll Make America Great Again' And, of course, he fucks it up even more. Boasting and confidence is no substitute for actual competence Unfortunately it's little better anywhere else. no government of any size is remotely competent to handle structural global changes, so they are having wars instead. You can bury a lot of bad news in a war. You can blame it all on someone else. Humanity is going to wallow in incompetence for decades until someone comes up with something that works. -- The theory of Communism may be summed up in one sentence: Abolish all private property. Sadly, given the sparseness of much of the rural US, a "cellular bridge box" is what the "bells" managed to regulatory capture talk the FCC into allowing them to use as a replacement for the 100 year old analog copper phone wiring when they decomission the copper. Plus the box he's talking about does not do internet, it's an FCC approved substitute for POTS phone service.

Nope. KNEW this. HOPED my copper would
last a few more years.
ALMOST did ... phone still did everything,
but RING. They DIDN'T/WOULDN'T fix it.

(a) concrete with rebar
(b) MIGHT hit existing wiring, causing
fires or electrocution.
Roughly 1950 construction - Pill-Box.
Built by a construction contractor for
his own fam - who lived there for a few
years. He did NOT cut corners. Kinda
cat-4 construction.
Fiber SOUNDS easy, IS in many cases. But
not in MY case. From now on I'm gonna have
NOTHING but wireless - and the signal sucks.

1950 poles and wires ... now wired-in to my
power grid via vines and shit.
> Using cellular technology for internet is at best a temporary bodge.

> You would be better off with Skylink
AM looking into StarLink - but it's not really
meant for EVERYTHING yet. Price ain't bad though.
Biggie is keeping my old land-line NUMBER ...
all most everybody of value uses. My new cell
thingie DOES use that number.
Dislike cells. Have SOME uses but as many
pains. Thinking of going to another carrier,
maybe even something cheapo like Consumer
Cellular, with a Samsung Android smart(ass)
phone as a THIRD number.
Found a 2-year newer model of the traditional
inline answer machine. Now installed. LIKE
those - a few easy buttons, no star codes
or worse. Odd how "improved" really means
"MUCH more complicated/unusable" ....
Yea, yea ... means "Nerds Like Me" were
involved :-) Alas nobody CHECKED the nerds,
nobody synced them with Reality. A room
full of "Sheldons".
Hmm ... just for fun ... tried to send a TEXT
to my new cellular thingie. No good - and NO
real way to READ it even if it did work.
This is getting more and more annoying even
as I'm getting older and older. NOT good !
Is my future to be WITHOUT handy comms ???
STILL don't know how to PAY for the new
cellular thingie ...... may have to go
and create a New Online Account, which I
recall is kinda NOT so easy or transparent.
There IS a Company Sales Office ... might
have to buy a new cell, but then they likely
WILL consolidate all my accounts during the
process. Have about a month.
