Persia has been pretty kick-ass at various times.

Alexander squished Persia - but had no success
   with Hindustan.

Persia would LIKE to be a big scary all-controlling
jihadi nuclear power right now. Does that sound good
   for everyone else ?

Anyway, power/capability shifts between nations and
regions all the time. Human nature, anyplace that
thinks it's superior at the moment WILL try to take
over everywhere else. Seems built into our brains,
the 'dominance hierarchy' thing taken to the next
level. He who pecks the most heads WINS.

Because, as one Jewish GF advised me. 'so they know where they stand'

All this social freedom is simply too much for many people. They want to
be told what to do and provided with enough money to do it and then they
can relax switch off and cease to become individuals.

It's all a function of what works in the current stable economic society.

Various mores arise because in a given context they 'work'

The problem comes when they are transferred to a culture where they do not.

Yes, I've seen the groups of U.S. women who can't wait to give up the vote.

One solution is to transform the culture. This is now happening in the U.S.

However, as insurance statistics show, people who 'put their trust in
Jesus'. or say 'In'shallah' every time they pull out in front of a
truck, do not improve the durability of the culture they seek to subvert

I was hiking up Wheeler Peak in Nevada and was close to the summit but
there was a line of thunderstorms moving in across the valley. I chose to
get the hell of the mountain. A woman coming up the trail asked how far it
was the summit and I said I wasn't sure since I hadn't went to the summit.
'Jesus is my lord and savior and he will protect me.' 'Honey, I roll with
Wotan and he's got no time for fools.'

I had just made it down to the treeline when the wind, rain, hail, and
lightning hit. I assume Jesus girl had a lot of fun.

Its all part of God Swill.

I was brought up to believe that you should never give offence if you
can avoid it; the new culture tells us you should always take offence if
you can. There are now experts in the art of taking offence, indeed
whole academic subjects, such as 'gender studies', devoted to it.

Hmm ... plenty of times I did NOT make it downhill
before the storms hit. Spectacular view from the
   tree-line :-)

   There's a REASON it's the "tree-line" ... because
everything above gets BLASTED TO SPLINTERS by the
   lightning storms.

Anyway, favor Thor and you should be OK :-)

Just how messed up *are* you in the head?

It is the tree line because of temperature (too low) and rain levels
(too little) that trees can't grow above that point.

But it's not because "lightning comes along and blasts all the trees
trying to start growing above that line".

Been there, seen it, even seen it in action
   WAY too close-up. So STFU.

   Yea, yea, temperature/pressure DOES play
a role, but the lightning is the avenger

No it isn't

I live near sea level. Trees get struck by lightning all the time

As do power lines and telephone lines

And pieces of bare ground even.

I remember standing on a first floor (second floor to Yanks) balcony,
gin and tonic in hand, watching a massive thunderstorm when a bolt of
lightning hit the ground about 60 metres in front of us.

A real WTF moment that was.
I've seen the sea get struck, too.

My brother-in-law was hit by lightning. He was part of a group doing an
reenactment on the Erie Canal, about 500 ASL. Because of the reenactment
EMTs were on site but nothing they could do. Statistics suck when you are

Around here the higher peaks are snow covered from late September until
June. There is quite a bit of low, brushy vegetation about timberline,
assuming there is soil, but the growing season is too short for trees.

At the transition zone you get some interesting Krummholz.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krummholz

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montane_ecosystem

It's quite interesting. I've been in subalpine zones at a little over
4000' in Vermont, and over 9000' in Montana. Latitude doesn't play too
much of a part. I've encountered similar vegetation on Chiricahua Peak
(9773') that is almost on the Mexican border in southern Arizona that I
would expect around here at 7000'. No coatimundis here fortunately.
They're as big a pain in the ass as raccoons.

Perhaps, but they're just the shock troops.
There's plenty more where they came from.
