Persia would LIKE to be a big scary all-controlling jihadi nuclear power right now. Does that sound good for everyone else ? Anyway, power/capability shifts between nations and regions all the time. Human nature, anyplace that thinks it's superior at the moment WILL try to take over everywhere else. Seems built into our brains, the 'dominance hierarchy' thing taken to the next level. I chose to get the hell of the mountain. A woman coming up the trail asked how far it was the summit and I said I wasn't sure since I hadn't went to the summit. Just how messed up *are* you in the head? It is the tree line because of temperature (too low) and rain levels (too little) that trees can't grow above that point. But it's not because "lightning comes along and blasts all the trees trying to start growing above that line".

Mountain slopes are wet all thee way up on the > windward side Around here the higher peaks are snow covered from late September until June. There is quite a bit of low, brushy vegetation about timberline, assuming there is soil, but the growing season is too short for trees. At the transition zone you get some interesting Krummholz. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krummholz https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montane_ecosystem It's quite interesting. I've been in subalpine zones at a little over 4000' in Vermont, and over 9000' in Montana. Latitude doesn't play too much of a part. I've encountered similar vegetation on Chiricahua Peak (9773') that is almost on the Mexican border in southern Arizona that I would expect around here at 7000'. No coatimundis here fortunately. They're as big a pain in the ass as raccoons.
