Monochrome could utilise higher bandwidth and had no 'pixels' as such.
Color CRTs were always an abomination - shadow masks work, and the Sony
Trinitron was the best of all, but today's LEDS beat them hands down

With color displays, even good ones, certain
"tricks" with fonts proved useful. If not
then, well, we wouldn't still be seeing them.

But frankly, for sharp crisp text, the old
monochrome units were 'better'. My users
stuck to them for a long time before everything
   went totally 'GUI'.

There was at least one monochrome monitor ...
white, but with a slightly 'warm' tinge. Can
not remember exactly. IBM ? AT-era anyhow.
They were very much loved. The 'green screen',
not so much, nor the 'amber'.

   Anyway, WordPerfect+mono ... top productivity
   and happiness.

Ericsson? though they tended to use amber rather than paper-white

Yes, I still miss "reveal codes" mode in wordprocessors, and the way it
could do combined indents and tabs.

That was WordPerfect.

Other word processors didn’t have any embedded “codes” that they could
“reveal”. What you saw was what you got.

That's an absurd thing to say - *all* rich-text word-processors have
embedded formatting info, otherwise they would have no means by which
to save the specifics of the rich-text properties.

(At least, prior to the advent of Unicode's Mathematical Alphanumeric
Symbols block - but using this for styled text is a Bad Idea no matter
how popular it is with the fondleslab TweetSky crowd, because it's pure
hell for accessibility:

It *would* let you fine-tune. Most competitors
just *did* it and you couldn't do much about it,
   often couldn't even see it.

When a PPOE got its first personal computers, they all
had colour monitors. Not only were the text displays
fuzzy, the response time was so slow that a good typist
could get a full word ahead of the screen. Eventually
we swapped all but one of the colour monitors (the
engineers needed colour for their work) with Hercules
displays: razor-sharp and lightning-fast.

That's what happens when you let executives make
the purchasing decisions.

This was the typical situation throughout much of the 1980s. This is
why IBM sold two major display systems for its PC range in those early
days: CGA with colour graphics and lower resolution, and MDA with
higher-resolution, but text-only -- no graphics.

This changed in 1987, when Apple introduced the Mac II, along with its
RGB 13” (later rebadged 14”) colour monitor, based around a Sony
Trinitron CRT. Reviews widely regarded this as the first colour
monitor that was so good, you could use it for monochrome work and not
realize it could do colour.

I remember a display that came with ... was it "PC-Jr" or
   one of the other lesser-selling sub-versions ? ... that
was just beautiful monochrome. That 'warm-ish' white,
very crisp and no eye-strain. The original Mac monitors
   were good too (albeit tiny).

   Were good.

Alas, for a long time, decent displays were
   almost a corporate afterthought.

I think the Amstrad PC 1512 had a reasonably good colour display in
1986, because it came with a GUI, called GEM. I did not pay for it, so
bought the monochrome display, which was rendering the colour mode in
different values of grey.

16 colours in 640×200

Bus. It is axiomatic that you got it wrong

It is the same word because it has the same meaning

The word bus is a shortened clipping of omnibus, a Latin word meaning
"for all" or "for everyone"

Electrical / Audio Bus: Derived from "bus bar" (short for omnibus),
referring to a common electrical conductor or signal pathway that
combines and distributes power or audio signals to multiple circuits.

Buss is an archaic word for kiss

I'd have to look but I believe my SuSE 8.1 box contains 5 CDs and 1 DVD

The Linux-7.1.9 kernel on my Debian Unstable install is only about 14MB.

If you want to include functioning userlands (without GUIs), I also
have various LXC containers on this machine, ranging from under a
gigabyte to about 8 gigabytes.

Probably the smallest functional GNU/Linux install is the Gentoo
stage archive which will boot into console mode (no GUI).

The compressed size is a whopping 257 megabytes:

Sid is slipping. Fedora 45 is 7.2.6 and Tumbleweed is 7.2.5.
