I have seen and heard a lead acid explode.
I have never seen a Li-Ion pack explode. Catch fire, yes, but not go bang.

Exactly so.

Catch fire, yes, but not go bang. It IS possible ... heavy charge/discharge conditions while stored in a confined space. However it's the hydrogen that flashes ... the lead plates don't burn. You may get a Bang, but no "melt-down". >> Plus, for lead acids, the explosion is a hydrogen gas fire, which >> extinguishes itself once the gas has burned off. Failure in lithiums is MUCH worse - almost impossible to extinguish. Read one news story, Tesla lit off and, fortunately, a road crew had just dug a deep wet pit nearby. They pushed the thing into the water pit and waited for awhile afterwards :-) Anyway, DO keep track of sodium batteries. You can already buy big ones. New tweaks to improve the capacity and charge speed seem to show up in the tech news monthly. Took awhile, but the things now ARE ready for prime time. There are other maybe-decent kinds of batteries, but they are not as close to mass-sales applications as the sodium batteries. Anyway, as said, search Amazon for "Sodium Car Batteries". Plenty to choose from. The voltage/charge params are very close to lead-acid batteries - a "drop in" replacement. I've wanted to make a smaller solar power station at my home. Have enough room for maybe eight 300w panels. Battery charge and AC-output boxes are pretty cheap. If I do make this, minimal power in case of long outages, I'll probably use sodium batteries. Yes, there ARE lithiums - which might go BOOM and set fire to everything - and "Vanadium Flow" batteries that are still too expensive. Edison cells are not out of the picture, but some tricks to keep the electrolyte level correct are needed lest you have to check/tweak them all weekly. Sensors/little pump, sounds like a job for a PI :-) I've got several DEAD generators - the PROBLEM with them all is that you can NEVER get all the gasoline out of the lines/carb and it solidifies. The things are, seems intentionally, built that way. My last unused one CAN take propane. Not a big gen, but in an emergency I can plug/unplug as needed for basic shit - a few fans, TV, internet, charging. Been there, done that, more than once. Shit, when the thing came in ... missed the delivery guy, about 65 lb big box. HAVE a little hand truck. Almost fell over TWICE - the sheer weight of the package was a support. Serious drag getting old ... Lower-back issues - nerves don't always work like they used to. No docs are gonna TOUCH it though ... they set out to 'fix' my brother - procedures and pills and procedures to fix the procedures and more pills and pills and injections to fix the pills and injections .... ruined and killed him. Never let docs anywhere near yer spine ! Wait for space alien med tech !

Obviously you missed the "they provide their own fuel and oxygen to continue their fires until they consume themselves" part. That's what makes them so impossible to extinguish. You have to physically cool them down below their ignition point to stop their fires. It is not enough to shield them from the atmosphere. They will happly burn underwater, or in a fully sealed chamber, because once they ignite, they are "self-oxidizing".

Of course nobody does so. The swollen batteries pop the back cover off so you see many of them with rubber bands or tape holding them together. I kept a spare or two on hand to replace them when they became too swollen. At first I was paranoid but nothing ever happened. My Nokia phone's battery also swelled enough to split the case. The phone wasn't designed to be serviceable and the repair looked so painful I bought a new phone. It still starts up.

Those "brick" cell phones of the 80s were "teensie" compared to the 70s models :-) Hmmm ... movie ... "MIB-3" ... an agent pulls out a HUGE proto cell - warned "DON'T put that thing up to your HEAD !" :-) Modern 'flip phones' are pretty 'teensie". The big flat breakable 'smart' phones, not so much. I'm gonna HAVE to buy one of those big flat 'phones' eventually, yet another thing on my account. My old landline is dying, maybe dead. Some tech is supposed to come by in a couple weeks to replace it with what I think is a "VOIP Box". Alas he may call via my landline, which doesn't RING anymore. Won't know he is calling. Gonna have to spend hours TRYING to get them to call my cell instead. Positive of no-ring, 95% of the calls I get are JUNK calls - salesmen, scams and such. When they get "Beep ! Please leave a message ..." most hang up. It's that other 5% ......
