Buchanan ran for president, '92 iirc, but got little traction.

My impression is it was always business oriented. The first Republican president, Lincoln, waged a civil war to support the interests of the northern industrialists. I've never felt comfortable in the big tent. It attracts the religious right by supposedly being against abortion, gay marriage, and so forth. When I vote for the Republican candidate it is because the Democrat is completely unacceptable. At times I vote for the Libertarian even though it's a hopeless cause and i don't care for their free trade and open borders agenda. The last time around they picked a gay blade for the candidate which was too much for the LP in this state.

Everybody "cleanses" their origins - invents great and glorious myths. Lincoln didn't love slavery, but was willing to just IGNORE the issue as much as possible - until it became impossible to ignore in the middle of a war. Basically the Republicans were Just Another Party, another, kind of false, "choice" in hopes of gaining more power. The Democrats were an older party, but the inevitable fuck-ups left them open to outsiders pretending to be "better". NOW we have the 'socialists/communists' pretending to be "better", "different". Don't buy it for one second.

Ummm ... don't think he was SO evil. But it WAS a very VERY difficult equation during the time. Slavery was GOOD ECONOMICS ... had been since the early 1700s. Getting RID of slavery meant MASSIVE loss of money to the most slavery-dependent areas. The USA "Founders" - few were really in FAVOR of slavery ... but HAD to support it lest no UNION could be created. The power of the UNION was More Important at the moment. Yea, realities/priorities sometimes SUCK. Nothing new there.

Lincoln extended the > project by the Federalists to ensure The United States was an overpowering > entity rather than a minimalist government of the united states. "Federalism" won the early debate. Jeffy imagined a bunch of 'gentleman farmers'. Would NOT work, not even in the 1700s. As for how 'powerful' the USA was on the world stage, it didn't MATTER so much at the beginning. By the 1860s though there were a number of predatory foreign powers interested in a piece of the USA. We were large, we had lots of stuff - SO ... well ... get POWERFUL. Times change, gotta adapt. However note the USA, unlike so many others, was not much interested in armed take-over/colonization of other countries. England and a lot of the Euros had EMPIRES - rule of the gun. USA didn't need to, so we didn't AND it just seems "wrong". "Soft-er Power", "influence", the better way.

The US did cut the Philippines loose eventually.

You have missed out all the rest of the United states. Where did you
think Indiana got its name? Or the Mississippi?
America was colonised by the losers of Europe who murdered its
inhabitants and took their land.
And you have the nerve to talk about 'British Colonialism'
You got rid of THAT as soon as its laws made murdering Indians inconvenient
The Proclamation Line of 1763
Land Protection: Following the French and Indian War, King George
III issued the Royal Proclamation of 1763, setting an Appalachian
boundary that barred white colonial settlement west of the mountains to
pacify the frontier and reserve lands for Native tribes.
Colonial Resentment: The restriction outraged land speculators and
colonists (including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin) who wanted
to expand westward, fuelling tensions that led to the American Revolution.
Alliances During the American Revolution
Siding with Britain: *Most Native American nations sided with the
British* during the Revolutionary War, hoping a British victory would
halt aggressive American westward expansion.
Divided Nations: Tribal confederacies split; for example, members of the
Iroquois Confederacy fought on opposing sides, with Mohawk leaders
backing the Crown while other tribes supported the Americans.
Betrayal at Paris: The Treaty of Paris in 1783 ceded vast indigenous
territories to the new United States without any Native representation
or consent, leaving pro-British tribes vulnerable to rapid displacement.
If you want to talk about racism, slavery, genocide, and colonialism,
you need look no further than the 'United States of America'.

The land those 'inhabitants' invaded and murdered all the inhabitants ... who invaded and murdered ... on and on it went for 25,000+ years. So why is the current power one whit more murderous or responsible ?

I-90 follows it closely. Even today there is no real alternate route. It's telling that in all of Lewis and Clark's wandering through the lands of many tribes the only fatal contact was when they killed 3 Blackfeet who were trying to steal their horses and guns.

Lewis & Clark ??? That was just a SNAPSHOT, an instant in time. Sorry, but 'the natives' did as much or more damage to themselves as the euro settlers - for a long LONG time. Drop the 'utopian' bullshit.
