Amazon, Samsung 870 SATA SSD 1tb

$328 !

I bought several of these just two or three
years ago. Fit into my mini-boxes and a little
multi-drive USB unit. Reliable and FAST.

Back then, UNDER $100 ... closer to $85

M.2 has suffered similar inflation. Even 'flash'
cards have at least doubled in price over the
past 18 months.

Why ? "AI"/"Data Centers".

All the big corps have completely shifted their
production to what THOSE big boxes need in vast
quantity.

So, soon, they'll have all these data centers, but
nobody will have so much as a phone or laptop to
ACCESS them.

I have been stockpiling any working hardware, going back to Haswell PCs 
and DVD drives.

   I have an external DVD and another one built into an ASUS
   lap I upgraded about a year ago with the abovementioned
   SATA SSD. Also have a Blu-Ray burner unit. DVDs are kinda
   underpowered these days, but a BR can hold a kind of
   decent amount. Every so often I compress and archive some
   important dirs and then burn it onto the BR disk.

   MAGNETIC lap drives can still be had - about a third the
   price per TB. Have one WD Black in my external unit.
   More Seagate units for sale though these days. May
   buy a 4tb one ... just to have a spare.

   And hey, if all else fails, still have a USB FLOPPY :-)

   Can't find 5.25 USB floppy units any more alas.

   What will we be down to next - tape drives as
   working storage ? 1959 redux ?

   Hmm ... CAN you boot Linux from a tape drive ?

I have a couple of LTO drives, but biggest is only 800 GB (LTO4)

   Just priced some. A third the price per TB.
   Don't expect blazing performance like SSDs
   of course, but they'll WORK Ok.

   Alas even the mag drives have internal RAM
   buffers ... which the makers probably can't
   GET anymore.

   This is all looking worse and worse.

   I'm kinda set for another two or three years, but
   a lot are NOT.

   Heh heh ... just check Amazon !  :-)

   Magnetic drives are about a third the price per TB.
   Not as snappy, but they still work.

   We'll be down to those old spinny tape drives from
   1959 soon ....

Have you been living under a rock?  This has been hashed, and rehashed, 
for at least the last 8-10 months in the tech news sphere.

RAM has seen the same AI demand driven inflation and is presently some 
multiple more expensive than it was just 8-12 months ago.

   escalating, relevance. Year-old 'news' ain't 'news'.

   IF you can even still get what you want/need.

   It has become rather BAD.

   Shopping for new anything - it's gonna be a SHOCK.
