Clearly, the age of cheap tech is over and done.
This is well documented.
(Yes, $80 is ridiculous, but so it goes)

But, to be fair, the Zero 2 is more like a regular Pi than it is like an
original Zero.  It was never less than $10.  It has always been about $20.

The original Zero, at $5, was truly a bargain.  But I don't think we'll
ever see that again.

I bought a Pi Zero (non-W) for £7.58 + tax + p&p = £13.60 the other 
week, from a distributor.  They have the Zero 2W for £11.37 + tax + p&p

And its isolationist stance.

Once I ordered like $120 worth of small parts from a US supplier.
The transport, import duty, VAT  and handling charges doubled that.

I can import small stuff from china with none of that.

I think import duty on electronic components (like a Pi) is 0%, it'll 
attract VAT at 20% but that's the same as if I bought one from a local 
shop.  If the total value is over £135 the post office (or equivalent) 
is likely to charge a fee for collecting any vat+duty ...

Well in a way it has. China has an (unspoken?) arrangement that as long 
as VAT is paid - and Aliexpress does that - stuff get posted over really 
cheap on massive shipments that get split up and reposted in the 
destination country and there are no 'big beautiful tariffs' on it at all.

China wants to export. USA does not. USA does not want to import either. 
*shrug* you voted for it.

If you go to DigiKey's site you'll find there are 0 in stock. There is a 
'check lead time' option that says they will be available 6/7/2027.

I've seen this in the early '80s when lead times were a year or more. 
Before starting a design you researched what you could buy. Motorola was 
particularly bad as they responded to increased demand in the automotive 
industry as cars became more sophisticated. 

The Amazon pricing probably reflects a vendor who has stock on hand and is 
gouging for all they're worth, or should I say responding to the law of 
supply and demand. 

The problem is if Part B is designed in because of temporary shortage of 
Part A, there is little future incentive to go back to Part A.

I did, but the locator site said they had stock yesterday, not sure if 
they actually did or not?  I did manage to buy a zero a couple of weeks 
ago within the UK (both non-W and 2W were available at that time, I 
specifically didn't want a 2W)

If you look at the feedback of the marketplace supplier, there 1 star 
reviews from people calling them cunts, so I'd probably avoid ...

   USA has NO real equivs to the PI line.

   Maybe should, but doesn't.

   The current trade wars/adjustments ... things
   like PIs just got SCREWED. Short supplies,
   inflated prices.

   It WILL get better, but not THIS year.

   Oh, price MEMORY - SDs/M.2/etc - almost
   the ENTIRE world production has been
   shifted towards the "AI" market. For
   Joe Consumer - NADA !

They were screwed a couple of years ago (pandemic) and had got back to 
normalish, now AI sucking up RAM and flash production.

Personally I think the Pi5 has got too big for its boots.

I am not sure that big AI will ever prove profitable.

A decade ago I was briefly involved with LCD panel economics. Not one of 
the half dozen panel manufacturers had repaid the debt they accrued to 
build the factories.

The hope was that LCD panel manufacture would be like nuclear power 
stations - all the profit happened after the first 20 years of operation.

But nukes provide something the world needs and wants. I am not sure AI 
does.

   The current "trade adjustments" have had
   an effect. Alas a lot of stuff that was
   NOT a drag on the USA got caught up in
   this shit. "Collateral Damage".

   It WILL improve ... but not THIS year.

   USA, alas, has NOTHING like PIs. Should, but
   doesn't. Everything HERE is now kinda dedicated
   to "AI" - can't even get Mem/Storage.

   DID try an "Orange PI" ... it was NOT really
   "compatible" though. Could FORCE it to kind-
   of work ... but ......
