I decided long ago to accept some stuff as magic and get on with my
interests. An example is the recent network discussion. I can maintain
distros but the less attention I have to pay to the OS, the better. For
that matter almost everything I do on Linux could be done on Windows and
vice-versa. That makes me an agnostic rather than a True Believer.

CP/M ... you COULD pretty much grasp it all.

But today, even Linux, too much just IS "magic".
Nobody gets the whole package, at best just this
or that little BIT of it.

Unnecessary, though MAYbe not undeserved, meanness !

I've looked into what systemd does and, as much as
possible, how/why. It's NOT the Winders registry,
no "NSA Backdoor"s like I saw a far back as Win2k.
   (really ! check it !)

I mostly use systemd because it will start/watchdog
my daemons. Then I don't need to write my own watchdogs.

Anyway, systemd love/hate has become almost a fanatical
religion these days. IMHO, neither extreme is even close
   to the (current) Truth.

In theory major evil COULD be put into systemd ... but
at the same time there are always a lot of people crawling
into every crevice of the code for their own needs and
interests ... so it'd be FOUND really really quick.

Now now ... don't demonize FOSS the same way
   others demonize systemd ! :-)

In long experience, almost everyone in the Linux
sphere is TRYING to Do Their Best. Sometimes they
score, sometimes they don't, mostly it all falls
in-between somewhere. The more complex Linux and
add-ons become the harder is is to keep track of
   EVERY thing, EVERY possible interaction.

Oh well, you CAN run CP/M-86 using VirtualBox ...
got one of those VMs stashed somewhere ...... may
   take another look ........

WOULD suggest a DOS-3.x VM however - proper compilers
for 'C', FORTRAN, COBOL and Pascal can be had for that.
Turbo Pascal will work too. I *think* the (very) good
old Aztec 'C' compiler works in CP/M, so there are
options if you want "ultra-simple". Look around and
I'm sure you can find VERY old Linux systems too
that might still boot, or run in a VM. SOMEWHERE in
The Heap I still have Red Hat - on FLOPPIES.

So, if the modern world isn't "pure" enough ...

Whoever said “the Unix philosophy is to do one thing and do it well”

Hey, we NEED those fanatics !

A good init script is worth its weight in gold.

READ one sometime ... dozens, hundreds, of steps
and checks and tweaks just to install one stupid
little utility. The energy/skill to do ALL that
by hand from memory ... it barely exists.

Actually, that it's SO difficult to install said
stupid little utilities these days - doesn't give
me a good feeling for the future.

Maybe CP/M wasn't so bad after all :-)

   You may be right, alas.

The enthusiasm for 'free' OS/software isn't what
it used to be - and there's more MONEY writing
   evil JS spyware for browsers.

This is kinda why I've been looking into the BSDs
more of late. They're a bit more driven by 'academic'
types. There's always been good and bad in that, but
for the near future the 'good' may very useful.

I'm still a fan of static-linked binaries. No DLL hell,
no installer that has to know where to scatter a myriad
of files, no breakages when a library gets updated.
Just run the one file from anywhere and it Just Works.

Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more
to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.

To those of us who take for granted that there will be a systemwide
package manager to handle the dependencies and updates, built on an
underlying platform that knows how to handle shared-library
versioning, none of that is a problem.

Seeing more and more probs with those perfect
managers though. Still 'ok' by and large but
I see bitching about missing dependencies, oft
   involving v0.0.1 differences.

   Linux isn't simple enough anymore.

   So, prep "app-images" - all-in-one. Bigger, but
that's really not a thing these days.

It's a lot simpler than it used to be

That would *never* be a problem with Gentoo.

Although Gentoo Portage is extremely reliable in resolving
dependencies it is possible that the user may choose to build
packages outside of the Portage tree which may in time cause
dependency issues.

For this and other reasons, Gentoo has developed "revdep-rebuild"
which is a utility that examines every binary and library that
is installed on the system for consistency. It never fails
to locate problems which can then be easily corrected.

IMO, Gentoo is the only "distro" worthy of supervising a
GNU/Linux installation.

You are obviously talking about Windows here. The Linux world has
passed that time two decades ago. We have libraries with versioned
symbols, we have versioned package dependencies

>Just run the one file from anywhere and it Just Works.

... that just works.

If you have difficulties with that, I'd suggest trying Debian, the
Debian project does a pretty decent job with their library
dependencies.

Statically linked binaries, especially those who came "from anywhere"
usually don't get updated, which imposes a significant security risk
to the target system. I'd avoid doing that anyway or at least
container those binaries away.

I wonder how long it will be before Windows no longer gets taken
seriously as a development platform? I’d say Microsoft is already
fighting a rearguard action on that front; will the battle be over in,
say, another 5 years?

Wishful thinking. M$ is TOO BIG TO FAIL and
   will strong-arm serious competitors.

Now, under the hood, Winders maybe IS evolving
   into Linux/Unix.

Really new stuff is being developed for the web or as mobile app.
Things for installation on the Linux or Windows desktop are shipped as
Electron.

I think that mess is why we're seeing more and
more Linux apps come as "App-Images" - all in
one. Gets past a lot of distro/version issues,
though the code is bigger. These days it may
not matter so much if it's "bigger".

Python is kinda nefarious for being version/subversion
picky. So, you make an executable, containing everything,
and it'll Just Work across a much broader range of
   systems.

I've complained a lot about package and update
dependency shit before - haven't changed my mind.
Linux distros used to be 'simpler', less probs,
but NOW ... yikes ! Rolling distros 'solve' the
probs by completely replacing yer 2+ GB existing
system with the latest image. Excessive !

Anyway, if you want to distribute anything, DO
think "app-image". It'll Just Work in far more
   places.

A good systemd unit needs a tenth of the time and does more. I have
NEVER seen an init scrip that even tried to reach the security level
that is possible with 80 lines of systemd unit code. And that is not
even counting the time needed by building chroots and keeping them
current.

And it has always been a waste of human time.

The enthusiasm for 'money' is also less prevalent than it used to be and
is mainly a US centric meme.

All you need is enough to fund your chosen lifestyle.
