When "The Salesmen" promise - just automatically ASSUME the opposite. Heh ... last time I went to the dentist I made the "mistake" of asking how they were doing with their Great New Biz System. On-screen I saw what looked like the OLD system. The response was kinda like SHOCK ! The Salesman had PROMISED so much superiority - but, in practice, the software was TOTALLY UNUSABLE. CRAP ! It BADLY fucked their biz and made life HORRIBLE. The system was named after an animal - they now have a suspended icon in the break room that looks like that animal - and they SMACK it every time they go in :-) Of course their IT guy is making a killing. Got paid a lot to move their old data to the Great New System ... and NOW from that back to the OLD system that actually works :-)

Vista was when I moved all my, and most company servers and such, completely to Linux. My Gawd it was just SO horrible !!! Alas individual users ... sorry ... they were NOT gonna switch from Winders. This is The Rule. Had to keep coping with them. At least I could switch the Core systems.

I do get upset where after a huge update Windows shows 'Do not turn the machine off. Updating' for minutes. Finally you get a login screen which brings you to 'Getting things ready for you' for several more minutes.

That gives me a chance to more easily fix things if things go wrong. Since my root passwords are really ugly¹, I hate systemd's attitude of asking for the root password if something in the boot process goes wrong. I'd prefer the system to at least try² to get to a normal login prompt so that I can log in as my user before looking for the root password. Greetings Marc ¹ and in many enterprise environments, noone knows the root password, people log in with their user account and then escalate to root - a pity when that doesn't work. ² I do know that this is not always possible -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marc Haber | " Questions are the | Mailadresse im Header Rhein-Neckar, DE | Beginning of Wisdom " | Nordisch by Nature | Lt. I’m sure that’s configurable, since everything else in systemd is. I notice some systems now require the root password if you try to use the “single” boot option. If that doesn’t work, there’s always something like “init=/bin/bash” ...

This ain't the Friendly 80s.

Ah, the good old days... My Fedora box had almost 4 days of uptime before 'dnf needs-restarting' said it need to reboot for the latest kernel and systemd. Even stodgy old Mint is getting a new kernel. I don't update that one as frequently so it's up to 18 days 9 minutes. At least Leap only got a new Python today. I suppose I could ignore the updates but in my experience that way can lead to disaster when you finally do try. I do agree that with everything up 24/7 unless I'm doing updates a cold reboot isn't a problem for me.

The "updates" usually aren't much. EXCEPT perhaps browsers ... the Bad Guys are constantly trying to infiltrate browsers. It's an ongoing war, kinda in the literal sense.

It's an ongoing war, kinda in the literal sense. Maybe. Fedora just got another kernel after a massive 9 hours of uptime. Important to me? Probably not. Do I want to skip 10 kernels before updating? No.

If I get another kernel that fast, it is because there was an error when
making the previous one. I usually get about one a month.

Leap 16 uses the 6.12 LTS from November 2024. Fedora is at 7.1.5. It probably makes no difference to me but so it goes. For example 6.19 included improvements for btrfs. Both my Leap and Fedora boxes use btrfs but I haven't noticed a difference. Leap 16 is Python 3.13. In October it will only receive security fixes. Fedora 45 is scheduled to move to 3.15 in October when it is released. I expect there will be more fixes. Plasma on Fedora is 6.7.2, 6.4.3 on Leap, and so forth. Part of the decision making when selecting a distribution is how up to date you want to be. Fedora is semi-rolling and has fewer surprises than a rolling release like Arch or Tumbleweed while staying close to the newest versions. Leap is downstream of SLED and arguably is more stable. Ubuntu sort of splits the difference. 26.04's kernel is 7,0, which would have been 6.20 except Torvalds ran out of fingers and toes. It's a LTS release so while it has Python 3.14 I don't expect it will ever get 3.15. Ubuntu derivatives like Mint are a mixed bag. Mint's kernel is 6.17, its Python is 3.12. Newer kernel than Leap, older Python. I'm using those as indicators. systemd is 259 on Fedora and Ubuntu, 257 on Leap, etc. The nice thing about Linux is you get to pick your poison.

This cause "little" pain, mostly with bad rc scripts conversion to systemd units and overall third party software hickups with systemd. And that's it. All other things was purely third party software bugs and AUR maintainer fuckups :). Just subscribe to Arch news (e.g. via RSS) and read them before updating. All neccessary manual actions will be there. And try to update your system at least once per week (I do it on saturdays with morning coffee). Actually, I was surprised how systemd was made so good comparing to another software from same author - PulseAudio :).

It’s the only service manager I know of that also works for user sessions, not just for systemwide services. And that goes for its log handling, too.

Well, MacOS kept syslogd separate. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the idea for systemd came from MacOS's launchd. BTW: Whenever someone posts their reminiscences of all the trouble they had with printing on Linux, I point out that nowadays, Linux printing is as easy as on MacOS -- thanks to CUPS. Same goes for our phones. ;) ) -- -v System76 Thelio Mega v1.1 x86_64 Mem: 258G OS: Linux 7.1.5 D: Mint 22.3 DE: Xfce 4.18 (X11) NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090Ti (24G) (610.43.02) "I'd love to, but I prefer to remain an enigma."
