I do get upset where after a huge update Windows shows 'Do not turn the machine off. Updating' for minutes. Finally you get a login screen which brings you to 'Getting things ready for you' for several more minutes.

Ah, the good old days... My Fedora box had almost 4 days of uptime before 'dnf needs-restarting' said it need to reboot for the latest kernel and systemd. Even stodgy old Mint is getting a new kernel. I don't update that one as frequently so it's up to 18 days 9 minutes. At least Leap only got a new Python today. I suppose I could ignore the updates but in my experience that way can lead to disaster when you finally do try. I do agree that with everything up 24/7 unless I'm doing updates a cold reboot isn't a problem for me.

The "updates" usually aren't much. EXCEPT perhaps browsers ... the Bad Guys are constantly trying to infiltrate browsers. It's an ongoing war, kinda in the literal sense.

No.

If I get another kernel that fast, it is because there was an error when
making the previous one. I usually get about one a month.

Leap 16 uses the 6.12 LTS from November 2024. Fedora is at 7.1.5. It probably makes no difference to me but so it goes. For example 6.19 included improvements for btrfs. Both my Leap and Fedora boxes use btrfs but I haven't noticed a difference. Leap 16 is Python 3.13. In October it will only receive security fixes. Fedora 45 is scheduled to move to 3.15 in October when it is released. I expect there will be more fixes. Plasma on Fedora is 6.7.2, 6.4.3 on Leap, and so forth. Part of the decision making when selecting a distribution is how up to date you want to be. Fedora is semi-rolling and has fewer surprises than a rolling release like Arch or Tumbleweed while staying close to the newest versions. Leap is downstream of SLED and arguably is more stable. Ubuntu sort of splits the difference. 26.04's kernel is 7,0, which would have been 6.20 except Torvalds ran out of fingers and toes. It's a LTS release so while it has Python 3.14 I don't expect it will ever get 3.15. Ubuntu derivatives like Mint are a mixed bag. Mint's kernel is 6.17, its Python is 3.12. Newer kernel than Leap, older Python. I'm using those as indicators. systemd is 259 on Fedora and Ubuntu, 257 on Leap, etc. The nice thing about Linux is you get to pick your poison.

This cause "little" pain, mostly with bad rc scripts conversion to systemd units and overall third party software hickups with systemd. And that's it. All other things was purely third party software bugs and AUR maintainer fuckups :). Just subscribe to Arch news (e.g. via RSS) and read them before updating. All neccessary manual actions will be there. And try to update your system at least once per week (I do it on saturdays with morning coffee). Actually, I was surprised how systemd was made so good comparing to another software from same author - PulseAudio :).

Well, MacOS kept syslogd separate. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the idea for systemd came from MacOS's launchd. BTW: Whenever someone posts their reminiscences of all the trouble they had with printing on Linux, I point out that nowadays, Linux printing is as easy as on MacOS -- thanks to CUPS. I'll admit I was amazed when I plugged an old Samsung CLP-375 in and it just worked. I have a fraught relationship with printers that goes back to the '80s. I'm amused by my dentist. She has two printers and trying to get either one to print a receipt is an adventure. I've told her the receipt ultimately goes in the trash and I don't need it for anything but she insists. She has mastered the technique of 'if it doesn't work, hit it harder'.

I made the "mistake" of mentioning to someone in my dental office about how it was going with their Great New Biz System. The response was something like SHOCK. Some glib salesman had sold them on their Great New Better System - but NOBODY could get it to work worth a damn. Disaster ! However their IT guy IS happy ... he got paid to xfer their files over to the new system, and now AGAIN going back to the OLD system that actually worked :-) Oh, the Great New System is called "Dolphin". Now they have a dart-board with a dolphin pic on it. Really. :-)

I don't know what my dentist uses. I know they changed software, and
they have some computer with the old system in order to see the old
data. But on their new terminal they have a 3D representation of my
mouth, they can see in isolation a single molar, in 3D.

I cant answer for today but when my niece set up a dental practice it was all windows and the networking sucked. Microsoft didn't want a desktop PC loaded with image processing software to talk to the x-ray machine. Took a week to get it all working. -- Climate Change: Socialism wearing a lab coat.

Well, I have no idea how they did it. I guess they hired someone to do
it all.
They did have some problem with their tools: water not coming out when
it should or the lamp going off. They muttered about something wrong on
that station.

It's her and a hygienist and unless there is a lot more traffic than I've ever seen I doubt it would be feasible today for a solo dentist to set up.

And unless things have changed recently, the chairs and a lot of the other equipment are almost certainly made by one of two companies headquartered in Newberg, Oregon, USA. Last I heard, https://www.a-dec.com/ has about 90% of the worldwide dental chair (and equipment) market, while https://www.dcionline.com/ has nearly all of the other 10%. Some of my neighbors work at A-dec. So, thanks for keeping my neighbors employed! -- Robert Riches spamtrap42@jacob21819.net (Yes, that is one of my email addresses.)
