Funny thing is that I never have any problems with nvidia graphics on
Linux using proprietary drivers. NEVER. Running CUDA? No problems!
Gaming with wine? Here we go! Native gaming! Lets ride!

I won't speak for power problems of course, still remembering my pain
trying to get gtx460 working on full power, but it was solved by
disabling powermizer. Even now there are some problems with power,
sleep/resume...

Except Wayland, of course. Wayland and nVidia starts to work together
very recently.

And moreover, I think laptops with intel+nvidia are best for Linux,
because I never experienced much trouble running games on discrete card.
On wayland it just works, on X11 I was launching games in another X
session so composition pipeline won't ruing my input latency.

Everyone praises AMD, woohoo, open source drivers, so configurable... I
have a desktop with 5700xt and it won't made things simplier - I have to
specify VERY OWN RADV OPTIONS FOR ALMOST EVERYTHING TO WORK PROPERLY.
Now that desktop gaming firmware (Windows :-D). And EVEN THERE videocard
sometimes just get lost so I have to reinstall amd drivers... Nuts!

And yes, don't be confused with rpi working fine - they using specific
chipset with specific radio, make BCM4313 work flawlessly :).

You're lucky. I don't have Nvidia in any of the boxes but Nvidia problems
seems to be a common complaint on the forums.

TensorFlow does get a bit snotty when it can't find CUDA. I'm not sure
even Nvidia realized the potential. AMD certainly was asleep at the wheel
although ROCm is gaining a little traction.

Yet with AMD cards there are always glitches here and there ¯⧹_(ツ)_⧸¯.

I did have NVidia, and it was trouble.

I have an old desktop that can not get the proprietary driver because it
stopped being updated for my card, and I had to revert to the open driver.

I switched to AMD, and no more troubles.

LOL I switched to intel integrated and got the same performance with no
separate card at all

Unless you are a gamer you wont need an extra card moistly. And gamers

I've got 2 of each, Intel or AMD integrated and whatever the Pi uses.
Works for me. The last separate card I had was a AMD 2400 years ago,
selected for cost not gaming ability.

The old driver? Not with newer kernels, no.

The machine has some issues. One was video: no 3D. Another was
virtualization: the CPU lacks some instructions, and vmware refused to
update. Then memory: only 8 gigs.

I had issues with intel drivers on another laptop. There were bugs which
intel refused to solve. For instance, on my mini server machine: the
mouse leaves a trail of pointers in the screen that blink. Cure is
ctrl-alt-f1 and back.

> Unless you are a gamer you wont need an extra card moistly. And gamers

My current AMD can run the few games I tried. Games that came with the
distro. fsfg, penguins on ice, etc.

I was in a similar situation. I have Nvidia cards and generally have
had no problems, at least as long as I use their proprietary drives.
(Nouveau would lock up too often for me.) However, when I updated one
machine to Debian Bookworm, it wouldn't accept the driver I was using;
I upgraded to a newer driver and it wouldn't accept my graphics card.
Replacing the graphics card with a newer model got things going again.

>> I switched to AMD, and no more troubles.

So far Nvidia stuff still works for me.

Never used an 'AMD' cards. Think I used 'Radeons' back in the

The last video adapter I bought was an ATI Radeon 2400 but that was about
15 years ago. The original card failed and all I could find locally were
high end cards for gamers so it probably was the cheapest thing on Amazon.
It worked.

That was the last build I did before deciding COTS boxes met my needs and
were cheaper than DIY. The thrill of choosing mobos and components and
hoping it would all work wore off. Everything I have now is either Intel
or AMD integrated graphics. Works for me. TensorFlow would be happier with
a GPU but it will fall back to a CPU, good enough for the toy models I
work with.

I bought one because 2FPS was too slow for a game I wanted to play. the
chepest Nvidia got that up to 50-60 and all was ok

Exactly. when my local PC supplier's cheapest offering into the home
market got over $700 or thereabouts I started buying refurbished PCS and
laptops at half the price. And discovered that an ex office HP desktop
with intel onboard, did everything I needed at half the price.

It used to be the other way around.

My Pi 5 uses Broadcom for both WiFi and BT. They work. However I'm using
the Trixie based Raspberry Pi OS so it damn well better have drivers for
the Pi hardware. I've never experimented with other distros on the Pi.
Some may quibble 'but, but, that's proprietary. Can't have that, can we?'

Where's the fun in that? I volunteer to walk dogs at the county animal

Many of them only want to do laps around home. A few want to go off on a 2

There is a metaphor or something there.

I care about boot times for my main laptop, as I don't use the
suspend or hibernate functionality. Once past the 5-second GRUB
screen, it's 10 seconds until sddm gives the login prompt.

The only downside is that sometimes a 90-second needless wait time
occurs before shutdown. I shortened that a lot, but it came back.

'sudo shutdown' ? I'll have to try that. I sometimes do 'sudo shutdown -r
now' out of old habits but 'sudo reboot' gets the job done with fewer
keystrokes. The only thing I shutdown is the Win11 laptop after its
monthly update.
