I care about boot times for my main laptop, as I don't use the
suspend or hibernate functionality. Once past the 5-second GRUB
screen, it's 10 seconds until sddm gives the login prompt.

The only downside is that sometimes a 90-second needless wait time
occurs before shutdown. I shortened that a lot, but it came back.

'sudo shutdown' ? I'll have to try that. I sometimes do 'sudo shutdown -r
now' out of old habits but 'sudo reboot' gets the job done with fewer
keystrokes. The only thing I shutdown is the Win11 laptop after its
monthly update.

Oddly enough sometimes reboot isn't enough: some hardware needs a full
power off

I tried Void Linux very recently and the start-up time is very
impressive. It doesn't run systemd. It runs runit, a beautiful daemon
manager.

I have an old eeePC with antiX that uses runit. It works but given the
inherent hardware limitations I can't make any judgment.

   GREAT little unit !

Bought a couple of other cheepos that are

Leap 16 on the Lenovo and Mint on the Acer are well behaved so far.
EndeavourOS on the Lenovo was a crap shoot.

Why would I, when it takes about ten seconds to boot?

Cleans out the kruft :-)

I use it for a couple hours, then go to my main machine (an
always-on mini PC) to continue.

Indeed.

Otoh, the always-on mini PC would use up all the RAM and the
swap and then go nuts trying to clean it up.

Finally traced it to picom (compositor). It's got major memory
leaks. Restarting it would clean out gigabtyes worth.

I got tired of doing it manually (or forgetting to do it), so made
a cron job that runs at 2 AM.

Why do I put up with picom? I find it helpful in my workflow.

I use Brave and very seldom bring up FF. With 16 tabs, T-Bird, Pan, Code,
and Calibre open 8705672 is used with 6542296 available. The only one I
have to watch is the netbook but it only has 4 GB.

IF you can afford it, pick a time of day and
just use crontab to reboot the unit maybe once
a week. That'll clean out the crud.

The funny thing is that this desktop does not have memory leaks but runs
the same firefox as the laptop, which does...

I cycle through the mini, a couple of laptops, and a tower. I might
shutdown one of the laptops if I'm taking it on a field trip. The LUG
suspended meeting for the summer so that hasn't happened recently.

I tend to have different projects on the different machines. Most involve
a MCU plugged into a USB port so it's easier to sort out. I assume
plugging in another would come up on /dev/ttyACM1 rather than ACM0 but I
never tried.
