When Google dropped their interface traffic dropped remarkably. alt.home.repair seldom has anything on topic but there was a Brit that I enjoyed who must have been using Google. I was surprised earlier this year to find Google Groups is alive, not just the interface. We started a Linux User Group in 2007 that fizzled out rapidly. Someone who wanted to revive the LUG found it and I received an email about a new post. We decided Google wasn't a good idea and moved to Discord just in time for the age verification panic. The next stop was Matrix/Element. Not my favorite, but so it goes. I'd looked at stoat but being based in the UK it is susceptible to the UK's campaign to reduce the aggregate web IQ to 57.

Others like newshosting start at $10/mo but also offer other services. People love to hate Reddit but the truth is r/linuxmint has much more traffic that alt.os.linux.mint. The focused subreddits are not bad. General ones like the local one tend to be trash.

At first I subscribed to a couple of decent subreddits like r/raspberrypi, r/pihole or r/GooglePixel, then r/Tumpstweets (for a laugh), but then I started to add more and more, like r/Europe, r/BuyFromEU, r/Belgium, which is a cesspool. Everybody tries be 'the funny one', even when serious questions are asked. Even worse, there's r/Belgium2 which is the same, but more racist. At one point I got a warning for quoting Trump who said 'grab 'm by the pussy' and later I got downvoted for correcting someone about Belgian law (on a non Belgium group), even though I provided a source. That was it for me. I found a script to delete all my messages (+6.000 by then) and then killed the account. I had the same experience with Twitter. Fun at first, but then toxic as hell. Not good for the mental health. I sometimes take a look at a subreddit, but without an account I'm not tempted to react anymore. Belgium is thinking of prohibiting access to social media for children under 13 (even though it's a failure in Australia). If that happens I'll probably be cut off 100%. -- s|b

Well, yeah, wade in a cesspool and you'll get shit on you. I censor myself when reading the local subreddit. Many of the posts are looking for the best dope (marijuana is legal in this state) or LGBQTZXOS+ types looking for queer bars. The SNR sucks but there is the occasional useful thread. All others are tech groups from r/adafruit to r/xfce. The exceptions are r/banjo and r/amazfit. Amazfit is a manufacturer of fitness watches. The only time I triggered someone was saying the new Agama installer for SUSE needs some work. When the dust settled more people agreed than not.
