Indeed. The practice had support contracts with all the major software
items and a support contract with the company who supplied the windows PCS.

Yup. The sheer cost of setting up a dental practice astonished me. Each
chair is tens of thousands and the whole practice was near enough a million.

Those who want slavery should have the grace to name it by its proper
name. They must face the full meaning of that which they are advocating
or condoning; the full, exact, specific meaning of collectivism, of its
logical implications, of the principles upon which it is based, and of

My dentist bought the practice from my former dentist about 25 years ago.
It's her and a hygienist and unless there is a lot more traffic than I've
ever seen I doubt it would be feasible today for a solo dentist to set
up.

And unless things have changed recently, the chairs and a lot of
the other equipment are almost certainly made by one of two
companies headquartered in Newberg, Oregon, USA. Last I heard,
https://www.a-dec.com/ has about 90% of the worldwide dental
chair (and equipment) market, while https://www.dcionline.com/
has nearly all of the other 10%. Some of my neighbors work at
A-dec. So, thanks for keeping my neighbors employed!

Mine has been using a new system too. She says the visualization is better
than what she gets from x-rays. It's way down the road but she is also
interested in 3D printing bridges and crowns rather than the current drawn
out process of making molds and sending them off to a lab.

It's a long way from when I was a kid and they used cable powered drills

I installed EndeavourOS and it worked well. I did update it frequently,
probably every two or three days, and after one update it didn't boot. I
screwed around for a while with a USB session, chroot, and all that good
stuff but couldn't get it fixed. I had a SUSE iso I'd been running in a VM
on another machine and there wasn't enough work/data to worry about so I
reinstalled.

I never could decide which got more new stuff 'pacman =Syu' or 'dnf
update' on Fedora 44. EOS includes 'yay' which is nice for the AUR stuff.

I had *fair* success with Endeavour. Seems to
    be a pretty nice system.

However, as also experienced with Manjaro, the
UPDATES seem to soon fail. Then you have to
    dump the whole system.

Sorry, NOT gonna replace crap with more crap.

The Archiverse needs to get its shit together.

And DON'T like their dual, regular + "AUR",
repo system. Get it all TOGETHER guys !!!

Still gonna stick mostly to "MX". It "Just Works".
Mint is pretty much the same.

See my notes on "DietPi" also. SOMETHING has
gone amiss on what USED to be a good minimalist
    OS.

The more complex and convoluted Linux distros
become, the more ways it can all go WRONG.

Somebody somewhere needs to look back maybe 15
years and figure out why all that used to
    go very WELL.

Yet you're using distros with PPA support and most likely have one of
them added to your repositories list. Am I right? How this is different
with "regular + AUR"? And, actually, it is MUCH MORE WORSE!

The only thing I hate about those COPR, PPA and other type of third
party repos in distros like Debian, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE is that there is no
guarantee that when some dependency updates these packages will be
rebuilt in timely manner, so it is more likely you will have broken app.
And moreover you cannot do it yourself with simple command - you have to
download package sources, build package, install built package, and it's
THREE different commands.

In Arch I can do that with simple "yay PKGNAME".

We can go futher - Gentoo's portage will rebuild packages automatically
if dependency was updated. But due to nature of distro I am not using
it, because I have work to do, not to mangle for hours with system update.

Fedora's RPMFusion isn't quite the wild west that AUR is. iirc when I was
messing with VirtualBox I had to add RPMFusion. I got rid of both.

No, thanks. The update to 6.17 was bad enough. It's an old netbook with a
Broadcom wifi chip and the dkms process would fail and it would revert to
6.14. To even install I use a Panda USB wifi dongle. Once installed, the
Mint driver manager was able to get a Broadcom driver. It had been working
but not with 6.17. I was able to find a deb with one that worked. Oddly
when troubleshooting the problem I got a lot of hits on Mac sites and I
think that's where I finally found the update.

I can't remember what I had on the netbook prior to Mint but it was the
same cha-cha. Install with the dongle the iso recognized and then get the
Broadcom driver. I don't know if it's because it's from 2011 or if
Broadcom support isn't up to par.

Broadcom Wi-Fi is a biggest crap in Linux world because there are no
good driver for it. To eliminate this problem just buy an adapter or
dongle that uses Atheros or Realtek chip.

The Panda dongle I have uses the RTL8812AU. The rest of the boxes are
either Realtek or Intel.

I think there is, these days.

bcmwl-kernel-source or broadcom-sta-dkms are AFAIK proprietary but
supported by broadcom

IIRC many Raspberry Pis use a broadcom chipset, and they mostly work

But I agree, in the past it was a complete pain

Along with Nvidia GPUs, but at least they made their drivers feely available

Funny thing is that I never have any problems with nvidia graphics on
Linux using proprietary drivers. NEVER. Running CUDA? No problems!
Gaming with wine? Here we go! Native gaming! Lets ride!

I won't speak for power problems of course, still remembering my pain
trying to get gtx460 working on full power, but it was solved by
disabling powermizer. Even now there are some problems with power,
sleep/resume...

Except Wayland, of course. Wayland and nVidia starts to work together
very recently.

And moreover, I think laptops with intel+nvidia are best for Linux,
because I never experienced much trouble running games on discrete card.
On wayland it just works, on X11 I was launching games in another X
session so composition pipeline won't ruing my input latency.

Everyone praises AMD, woohoo, open source drivers, so configurable... I
have a desktop with 5700xt and it won't made things simplier - I have to
specify VERY OWN RADV OPTIONS FOR ALMOST EVERYTHING TO WORK PROPERLY.
Now that desktop gaming firmware (Windows :-D). And EVEN THERE videocard
sometimes just get lost so I have to reinstall amd drivers... Nuts!

And yes, don't be confused with rpi working fine - they using specific
chipset with specific radio, make BCM4313 work flawlessly :).

You're lucky. I don't have Nvidia in any of the boxes but Nvidia problems
seems to be a common complaint on the forums.

TensorFlow does get a bit snotty when it can't find CUDA. I'm not sure
even Nvidia realized the potential. AMD certainly was asleep at the wheel
although ROCm is gaining a little traction.

I did have NVidia, and it was trouble.

I have an old desktop that can not get the proprietary driver because it
stopped being updated for my card, and I had to revert to the open driver.

I switched to AMD, and no more troubles.

I've got 2 of each, Intel or AMD integrated and whatever the Pi uses.
Works for me. The last separate card I had was a AMD 2400 years ago,
selected for cost not gaming ability.

The old driver? Not with newer kernels, no.

The machine has some issues. One was video: no 3D. Another was
virtualization: the CPU lacks some instructions, and vmware refused to
update. Then memory: only 8 gigs.

I had issues with intel drivers on another laptop. There were bugs which
intel refused to solve. For instance, on my mini server machine: the
mouse leaves a trail of pointers in the screen that blink. Cure is
ctrl-alt-f1 and back.

My current AMD can run the few games I tried. Games that came with the
distro. fsfg, penguins on ice, etc.
