If I get another kernel that fast, it is because there was an error when
making the previous one. I usually get about one a month.

Leap 16 uses the 6.12 LTS from November 2024. Fedora is at 7.1.5. It probably makes no difference to me but so it goes. For example 6.19 included improvements for btrfs. Both my Leap and Fedora boxes use btrfs but I haven't noticed a difference. Leap 16 is Python 3.13. In October it will only receive security fixes. Fedora 45 is scheduled to move to 3.15 in October when it is released. I expect there will be more fixes. Plasma on Fedora is 6.7.2, 6.4.3 on Leap, and so forth. Part of the decision making when selecting a distribution is how up to date you want to be. Fedora is semi-rolling and has fewer surprises than a rolling release like Arch or Tumbleweed while staying close to the newest versions. Leap is downstream of SLED and arguably is more stable. Ubuntu sort of splits the difference. 26.04's kernel is 7,0, which would have been 6.20 except Torvalds ran out of fingers and toes. It's a LTS release so while it has Python 3.14 I don't expect it will ever get 3.15. Ubuntu derivatives like Mint are a mixed bag. Mint's kernel is 6.17, its Python is 3.12. Newer kernel than Leap, older Python. I'm using those as indicators. systemd is 259 on Fedora and Ubuntu, 257 on Leap, etc. The nice thing about Linux is you get to pick your poison.

This cause "little" pain, mostly with bad rc scripts conversion to systemd units and overall third party software hickups with systemd. And that's it. All other things was purely third party software bugs and AUR maintainer fuckups :). Just subscribe to Arch news (e.g. via RSS) and read them before updating. All neccessary manual actions will be there. And try to update your system at least once per week (I do it on saturdays with morning coffee). Actually, I was surprised how systemd was made so good comparing to another software from same author - PulseAudio :).

Well, MacOS kept syslogd separate. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the idea for systemd came from MacOS's launchd. I don't know what my dentist uses. I know they changed software, and
they have some computer with the old system in order to see the old
data. But on their new terminal they have a 3D representation of my
mouth, they can see in isolation a single molar, in 3D.

I cant answer for today but when my niece set up a dental practice it was all windows and the networking sucked. Microsoft didn't want a desktop PC loaded with image processing software to talk to the x-ray machine. Took a week to get it all working. -- Climate Change: Socialism wearing a lab coat.

I did update it frequently, probably every two or three days, and after one update it didn't boot. I screwed around for a while with a USB session, chroot, and all that good stuff but couldn't get it fixed. I had a SUSE iso I'd been running in a VM on another machine and there wasn't enough work/data to worry about so I reinstalled. I never could decide which got more new stuff 'pacman =Syu' or 'dnf update' on Fedora 44. EOS includes 'yay' which is nice for the AUR stuff.

I had *fair* success with Endeavour. Seems to
be a pretty nice system.
However, as also experienced with Manjaro, the
UPDATES seem to soon fail. Then you have to
dump the whole system.
Sorry, NOT gonna replace crap with more crap.
The Archiverse needs to get its shit together.
And DON'T like their dual, regular + "AUR",
repo system. Get it all TOGETHER guys !!!
Still gonna stick mostly to "MX". It "Just Works".
Mint is pretty much the same.
See my notes on "DietPi" also. SOMETHING has
gone amiss on what USED to be a good minimalist
OS.
The more complex and convoluted Linux distros
become, the more ways it can all go WRONG.
Somebody somewhere needs to look back maybe 15
years and figure out why all that used to
go very WELL.

Get it all TOGETHER guys !!! Yet you're using distros with PPA support and most likely have one of them added to your repositories list. Am I right? How this is different with "regular + AUR"? And, actually, it is MUCH MORE WORSE! The only thing I hate about those COPR, PPA and other type of third party repos in distros like Debian, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE is that there is no guarantee that when some dependency updates these packages will be rebuilt in timely manner, so it is more likely you will have broken app. And moreover you cannot do it yourself with simple command - you have to download package sources, build package, install built package, and it's THREE different commands. In Arch I can do that with simple "yay PKGNAME". We can go futher - Gentoo's portage will rebuild packages automatically if dependency was updated. But due to nature of distro I am not using it, because I have work to do, not to mangle for hours with system update.

No, thanks. The update to 6.17 was bad enough. It's an old netbook with a Broadcom wifi chip and the dkms process would fail and it would revert to 6.14. To even install I use a Panda USB wifi dongle. Once installed, the Mint driver manager was able to get a Broadcom driver. It had been working but not with 6.17. I was able to find a deb with one that worked. Oddly when troubleshooting the problem I got a lot of hits on Mac sites and I think that's where I finally found the update. I can't remember what I had on the netbook prior to Mint but it was the same cha-cha. Install with the dongle the iso recognized and then get the Broadcom driver. I don't know if it's because it's from 2011 or if Broadcom support isn't up to par.

Broadcom Wi-Fi is a biggest crap in Linux world because there are no good driver for it. To eliminate this problem just buy an adapter or dongle that uses Atheros or Realtek chip.

I think there is, these days. bcmwl-kernel-source or broadcom-sta-dkms are AFAIK proprietary but supported by broadcom IIRC many Raspberry Pis use a broadcom chipset, and they mostly work But I agree, in the past it was a complete pain Along with Nvidia GPUs, but at least they made their drivers feely available -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.

NEVER. Running CUDA? No problems! Gaming with wine? Here we go! Native gaming! Lets ride! I won't speak for power problems of course, still remembering my pain trying to get gtx460 working on full power, but it was solved by disabling powermizer. Even now there are some problems with power, sleep/resume... Except Wayland, of course. Wayland and nVidia starts to work together very recently. And moreover, I think laptops with intel+nvidia are best for Linux, because I never experienced much trouble running games on discrete card. On wayland it just works, on X11 I was launching games in another X session so composition pipeline won't ruing my input latency. Everyone praises AMD, woohoo, open source drivers, so configurable... I have a desktop with 5700xt and it won't made things simplier - I have to specify VERY OWN RADV OPTIONS FOR ALMOST EVERYTHING TO WORK PROPERLY. Now that desktop gaming firmware (Windows :-D). And EVEN THERE videocard sometimes just get lost so I have to reinstall amd drivers... Nuts! And yes, don't be confused with rpi working fine - they using specific chipset with specific radio, make BCM4313 work flawlessly :).
