Again scale comes into play. Iran is 636,372 sq mi. Israel isn't even a
hundredth of that. Which would be easier to turn into a parking lot? Iran
has 20 cities over 400,000 population; Israel has 2.

If anyone is thinking about boots on the ground Iran is one of the most
mountainous countries in the world. As the US found out in Afghanistan
when you play with the locals on their own turf they will hand you your
ass. Best hang around the green zone in Kabul and come up with a good
story for the US people about what you're doing for 20 years before
handing the country back to the Taliban.

Iran is LARGE - but most of the pop/money/power
is concentrated in like a dozen cities.

Yea, Israel COULD nuke 'em mostly out of
   existence.

The Rule - if attacked with nukes you DO have
the total right to RESPOND with nukes. MAD.

We MAY be getting there - soon.

The Ukraine war is 'civilized' by comparison.
Nobody is shooting nukes around. Note Ukraine
DID mention that while it gave back all the
USSR nukes it STILL has a fair stockpile of
plutonium. Russia KNOWS this. Keeps everything
   at the 'conventional' level.

But Iran is run by FANATICS.

Israel also has its share of fanatics.

   NOT great.

I've long thought the nukewar would be between
India and Pakistan. Maybe wrong ...

   Ummm ... no.

The "Death To <fill-in-blank> !!!" people
are the ones to worry about. They are growing
   more and more capable.

Putin is a hard-ass, but not a fanatic.

Trump is not a fanatic. Kinda hard-ass, but
more a 'calculator' than a fanatic.

Xi is not a fanatic either, 'calculating',
   but not a fanatic.

Iran, NK, ISIS, neo-Marxists ... fanatics.

>>    Israel also has its share of fanatics.

The "ultra-orthodox" in Israel are a serious
political power, and fanatics - and Bebe HAS
to suck up to them sometimes. Any new PM will
also have to suck up to them. Don't pretend
Bebe is The Problem. The UO are bad as Hamas,
   just wear a different symbol.

Not so good. All very VERY "old school".
"Defeat your enemy, see them driven before
you and hear the lamentations of the women" ...

But then, what's new ? From old clay tablets on
the world has ALWAYS been like this.

But for 99.9% of that time we didn't have big
   nuclear weapons.

Precisely! Iran is a damn big place, a fact that Trump seems to overlook.
B1s were moved to Germany to be closer to the fray but what, exactly, are
they going to bomb? I'd heard the rumor a week or so ago but now it's MSM
news that the Houthis are acting up in the Red Sea. Nothing new there it
truth; the Saudis have been trying to exterminate them for more than 10
years; resilient little roaches.

I have no way to verify it but I saw a photo allegedly of one of the
bridges destroyed in the US attack. In Arizona they're called washes
rather than wadis but the idea is the same. They may have water in them
when it rains hard, which in AZ might happen every few years. For
convenience they are sometimes bridged. Anyway, the bridge was collapsed
but the wadi was as dry as a bone. They may have used a bulldozer to level
the bank a bit but traffic was driving across the wadi as usual. It may be
convenient if and when it rains. Good job!

That's a big IF. I don't think Iran has nukes; they never had. But
Netanyahu has been screaming for years they're "very close" to having
nukes.

I have no doubt they are there, developed using technology pilfered from
the US. It was an ironical statement since Israel has never allowed any
inspections, signed any treaties, or otherwise acknowledged their
existence.

If it's a bluff it's a ballsy one.

The "MIC" has been a racket since the 50s. Even Ike
   warned about it.

More and more worried about the "supposed" angle ...
figure they HAD enough 90+ percent to make several
bombs. The old Ayatollah didn't want them to make
bombs, but that doesn't mean they didn't have all
the PARTS around, just waiting to be assembled.

IronDome is GOOD ... but, as you say, Israel is
kinda SMALL. The exact same system for the USA
   would be an impossible investment.

However laser weapons MIGHT achieve a similar
   level of protection.

No. Tha'ts not the case. They were having a lot of trouble making
refined uranium - it took the US YEARS to make enough.

In fact it is normally easier - if you have a reactor - to breed
plutonium and separate that.

I think there is a few billion dollars worth of Golden Gravy in the NDAA
passed by the House. Thune doesn't seem to be able to pass a bill calling
for free lunches for senators so what happens now remains to be seen.

"GoldenDome" is NOT practical. The USA is just
WAY too damned BIG. It can be attacked from any
direction. The sheer scale of a missile defense
   system is, well, just impractical.

Something new/different would be needed - giant,
   really giant, lasers or something.

Alas enemies would try to disable such facilities
just before their main attack. You only need a FEW
routes into the US heartland .....

Oh, peace & love and universal disarmament ...
it's NOT HAPPENING folks. The species isn't wired
   that way.

You do realize Golden Dome is essentially StarLink with missiles? It's
designed to cover the world, not just the US.

   Won't, can't.

SOUNDS easy ... but the SCALE just screws it.

I think the only way to make this work is to move everything of
importance underground. And leave the surface for cyclists and bunny huggers

Don't worry. ICE will stop them.

Who's gonna PAY for them ? Just to cover the US
mainland we'd be talking maybe a few THOUSAND
of those 'small' lasers. X-percent will be out
of service at any given time.

Current 'directed energy' devices really just
ain't so good. Fuckin' atmosphere ......

When we have a permanent moon colony, put one
THERE to fend off the Chinese or whomever. In
a vac they WILL work well.

Oh, you don't have to directly hit any major
   cities - just plop a fallout-enhanced bomb
   somewhere nearby. Maybe worse ...

   Um ... no - alas .....

Without kinda literal Star Trek force-shield tech
countries will remain fairly vulnerable. Plenty of
promises, but no realistic solutions other than to
   prevent The War from happening.

Retroreflectors can be done using 'zone lenses',
   flat.

   However just bright chrome/gold micro-plating
   would probably serve.

   Assassin drones ?

   Forget DNA.

Biometric ID would serve - and is current
   and cheaper.
