For many things, 300,000 is close enough.

Yes, there are times where the more accuracy the better.
But I've found that much of life follows what I call the
"5 percent" rule: if it's within 5 percent, the difference
isn't worth worrying about.  This works for everything from
back-of-the-envelope calculations to driving a car.

I cut my teeth in the era where slide accuracy was close enough for 
government work.  It helped ground you in reality. Now a digital device 
may report a reading to 5 place accuracy, 3 of which are bullshit.

Ole Rømer’s original measurement, from around 1676, was more like
200,000 kilometres per second, as I recall. (Inaccuracies in the known
orbits of the planets at the time etc.)

whether light was infinite or just very fast, and if so, how fast it
was -- a million times faster than sound? A million million?

And Rømer made the discovery entirely by accident: he was trying to
measure the timing of the eclipses of Jupiter’s moon Io, and noticed
that there was a cyclic variation which would have had a period of
about 13 months (Wikipedia doesn’t mention this detail, as far as I
can see).

Once we had a ballpark figure, other researchers were able to pin
things down more precisely, because we now had a good idea where to
look for further measurements.

   But don't PUSH it.

   Sorry, had too many BAD experiences with OSuse distros
   of late. Anything even vaguely 'out of the ordinary',
   more than Granny might do, and probs start cropping up.

   OSuse used to be a 'Cadillac' distro - a bit fat but
   full of solid goodness. Used it for a long time on
   many things. But then ......

   Shit, even got OSuse to run on a Pi-4 - not 'snappy'
   but everything worked. The bad shit has happened in
   just the past two or three years.

   You're better off with vanilla Deb - then add what
   extras you need. Best Deb-derived distro is MX.
   That's my go-to now.

   Arch derivs - had good and middlin' experiences but on
   the whole they're pretty solid.
