Hello, all.  I recently installed the subject OS on an old Dell 
Dimension 9100.  In addition to the DVD installer stuff I subsequently 
installed gparted.  All apps run OK except gparted, gnome-system-monitor 
and Gnote consistently cause signal-11 faults.  Gnome-system-monitor and 
Gnote still won't run even with gparted uninstalled.  I've never 
experienced a problem with any of these apps on other platforms.  Any 
insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated.  Sincerely,

Try running memtest86+ on it, possibly you have a hardware fault.

Good advice. If memtest finds no problems, run a diagnostic on the hard 
drive.


Also:

No hardware diagnostic is 100% correct in all instances.

On /rare/ occasions I've had bad hardware (as confirmed by substitution) 
pass a diagnostic .

Though over-heating is a possibility most of the Dells I work on give a 
bios error if the CPU fan is not working

Hello, and thank you for the reply.  I have 2 GB of memory installed in 
the 9100 and I ran the Dell BIOS memory test (the one that's usually 
bypassed by default) at power-on.  I did receive error messages.  Sincerely,

Most likely faulty RAM then (although CPU, motherboard and other parts
are also possibilities).

When running a memory test one may stop it as soon as even /one/ fault 
is found.  There should be zero even after 24 hours.
