All kinds of byte/word sizes back in the day. We still see ez conversions to octal if specifying numbers in 'C'.

Before S/360 there were word addressed scientific computers and character or digit (decimal digit) addressed commercial machines. The IBM 7030 STRETCH was a one-off with 64 bit words and overimplemented bit level variable sized byte addressing. Then the 360 came out with 8 bit byte addressing and after that it wasn't long before we all know that word and digit addressed machines had no future. -- Regards, John Levine, johnl@taugh.com, Primary Perpetrator of "The Internet for Dummies", Please consider the environment before reading this e-mail. https://jl.ly

ITYM "IBM even adopted the term 'byte' from the telecom industry." Prior to
IBM's cooptation of the term, the word "byte" referred to any grouping of
continguous bits in a signal string. This older definition is what was adopted
into the PDP-6/PDP-10 instruction set, with byte pointers that include the size
as well as the position of the starting bit within a word.

Mainframe computers did I/O the same way before the channel notion came along.
Look, for example, at the IBM 1400 and 7xx/7xxx series.

The PDP-6 was marketed as a mainframe in 1964, announced 3 weeks before the
System/360 and delivered more than a year before the IBM system.
Channels do not make a mainframe, nor does direct I/O control make a mini.

No, as a former mainframe designer, there was no horror involved. Our customers preferred to offload such workloads to dedicated front-end controllers (in our case, one of which was built around an HP-2000). Recalling at the time that interactive used was typically form-based (e.g. airline reservation systems, bank teller terminals, etc) and the block mode terminals of the day typically transferred the contents of the screen (or the form fields on the screen) in a single transmission.

Yes. And it's noteworthy that we (again, or still) have a similar way of processing with web-based systems and their HTML forms today. Some unpleasant deviation is that nowadays some higher-level functionality gets externalized to the (now much more powerful) clients. Janis

Modern versions have MANY I/O/net ports. E-Commerce is assumed. 10k user connections at once, no problems. Things HAVE moved on since 1961 after all ... The age of the "mainframe" may be coming to an end alas. 'Cluster'/AI solutions are going to replace them for most uses. However science/govt still have uses for big ultra-powerful boxes for awhile anyway. SOME advantage in keeping access 'local' too - as opposed to spread all over the highly-vulnerable net. Oh well, maybe I can buy one of those big black IBM units for really cheap in a few years ? CANDY !!!

My children actually work "in science" where extremely demanding complex (hydrodynamic) simulation models are done; all done on such high-performance clusters. There had always been non-local access, even back in the mainframe days. For 'defense' shit, *a* mainframe is still far more secure than alt solutions. However, the distributed 'AI' shit WILL replace that for the most part in the next decade. Sorry, I'm a non-native speaker, and we colloquially still talk about "our kids" hereabouts even though they are adult. It's actually nice if we not only have own insights into the topic from former times but also have first-hand contemporary information from our "kids". It lets us compare which things have changed meanwhile and which principles still apply. [...] >> >> There had always been non-local access, even back in >> the mainframe days. > > Yep - happened. However it's easier to guard/armor > ONE mainframe than a vast network. It's not only "happening"; what I was referring to was that services of computing centers were used through remote access by companies and institutes in the whole state. But I understand what you meant; and I principally agree. We sadly see the issues nowadays and extremely wide-spread, and in areas where it's even arguable why systems are connected through the Net in the first place. An actual attack case here is that _cooling_ shelves of supermarkets all over the country have been remotely reprogrammed to heat-up the goods up to 50°C; literally tons of food spoiled and needed to be disposed. The "IoT" (Internet of Things) I consider a nightmare, as far the the remote control is concerned, but also the sensoring of data from private domains and transfer into "clouds"! > >> There's a more general problem here; whether a single >> "box" or a "cluster", if it's connected to the Net it >> has to be solidified. > > DOES require a lot of 'solidification' - esp now. > > Otherwise you're just working for your worst enemies. Or designing you own µprocessor. PCs just swept the opposition away. And Microsoft surfed the wave to corporate dominance in an era of me-too hardware. Unix staggered on for multi-user systems till Linus said 'fuck this for a game of soldiers'... Even ARM was initially a desperate attempt to create s 'better 6502' for the ultra low end home/educational computers, designed to use as few transistors as a struggling British company could afford to have fabbed. In the tradition of proper engineering it was 'doing for five bob what any damn fool can do for a quid'...and its ultra low hardware footprint and elegant instruction set made it first of all incredibly cheap for embedded use, and ultimately de facto for low power consumption. An entirely unintentional side effect of trying to make it CHEAP. Like Microsoft, it happened to be standing in the right place at the right time. People like to represent themselves as genius visionaries: But my experience is more that its a simple question of being in the right place at the right time, and the only smarts is in recognising that. The rise of LSI in the 70s made minicomputers possible. The rise of mass produced microprocessors in the 1980s made them irrelevant. And the 90s was really all about software. -- "When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him." Jonathan Swift.

The 5120 successor, the System/23 used the Intel 8085.

You have to remember the time (mid-1970s) when it was being designed; RISC was just beginning to make its presence felt, and it wouldn’t have been clear which approach would have been the best for the next decade or more -- who could see ahead that far? At that point, the world was still full of awkwardly-designed instruction sets that were annoying to program for; the PDP-11 was praised as being a major step forward in this regard, and the plan for VAX was to make it even more so. This sort of thing keeps being discussed on comp.arch. The success of RISC depended on having lots of CPU registers (and later caching as well), and you had to have good compiler technology to manage these hardware resources. The economics of doing all this properly took a few more years to fall into place.
