Oh 196MB RAM. should be OK  if enough swap enabled

I took your statement as a challenge. :)  I just installed Slackware
14.1 i386 into a VM with 196MB of memory.  You can find a picture of it

196Meg is likely to be very cramped overall, but it is possible to get
Linux booted on one, and it would be useful if one had nothing else to

Do you imagine to acutally work on that box or is it just out of
academic interest? Will you need a graphical environment?

If you really want to get good results, you could always add more memory.
Doing a bit of googling reveals that the 600X can take 2 256MB PC100 SODIMM
modules, which when added to the 64MB on the motherboard gives you a maximum
of 576MB.  You probably currently have either one 128MB module or two 64MB ones.
Amazon lists 256MB modules for $19.00 each.

This machine is not worth adding $40 of obsolete hardware.

Thanks to all responders - a very illuminating thread.

To anyone still reading, this is an old company laptop that needed to be 
wiped for security.  I was just interested in getting a working 
operating system onto the device for my own amusement.  So I have no 
intention of spending money on additional RAM or external hard drives etc.

It should be possible to install CentOS 5 on this machine, partitularly using 
the non-graphical installer and installing it withOUT the GUI desktop.

	Try SliTaz or TinyCore.  These are much smaller or were than
the bulky but friendly Puppy.  Damned Small Linux (DSL) might fit as 
well.  Look for i386 supporting distributions.

Noted.  Still, as others have pointed out, there should be some compact
distro that will run.  My first laptop had 48MB RAM and a 1.3GB hard disk,
and I was running Slackware 7 on it.  I had to pick and choose which packages
I installed to fit on that disk, but it happily ran fvwm and I even ran some
Windows programs under Wine.

This was 1981. I was told that this was the first desktop pc
delivered outside of IBM. I got it because I had experience
with basic from trs-80's and Apple II microcomputers.

It was replaced a few months later with one that had 64KB of ram,
and a 10MB hard drive, and two 180KB floppy drives.

Having mostly worked with IBM mainframes, where each program had
access to 4MB of ram, I hated working on the pc. I didn't buy one
for personal use until 1992, when they were more suitable for day
to day use.

Another update for those still reading....

Managed to load VectorLinux Light, suggested by Stef.

Although I winged it a bit, didn't set up home folder and ignored some 
other setup suggestions (due to ignorance of the features), it seems to 
work OK.  I can even browse the web via a PC Card style ethernet 
connection hooked up to the corporate network.

I never cease to be amazed at the funtionality of these different OSs 
given the open availability.  But still find some of the setup and 
application control clunky and unintuitive - this is probably just 
familiarity if truth be known.

Most of the 'small footprint' distros are more geared towards experts. The
more mainstream distros (eg Ubuntu), have fancier installers and system
management software, etc. But such distros will need more modern hardware with
a modern amount of RAM, disk, etc.

	My advice is use that net connection to Google up Linux User Groups in 
your vicinity and you will get enough help to make it easier.

	That is what i did about 12 years back.  Have hardly turned
aside since,  Now I host 2 meetings a month at a local coffee shop.
