 I am having difficulty installing Fedoracore 17. An old version of the
fedora distro. When loading the system drops to shell and says "Unable to
mount root filesystem" and there is no installation yet. There are fat32
partitions. Could it be having a problem with those? I type 'exit' and it
just prints some things to stdout and I have the same prompt. What's wrong?

	Bill I think you need to check the soundness of that old Fedora
you are trying to use.  The problem might be that it cannot mount its
own filesystem.
	Try other live distros to see if they have no problem or if they
come up with the same message.

	As for the partitions maybe it cannot mount them early on.  Try
a copy of the standalone Gparted partition manager to make sure you have 
Linux  partitions on which to mount it.

	Finally it needs good hardware so what are you trying to run it
on and I mean answer in term of cpu, size of hard drive/age, amount of
ram, etc,  Other people may be able to answer questions better with
more information while my answer may only be pointless speculations.

Why not use something more recent?  And if you want to use an older 
version of the software, why not use CentOS?  Then at least you will 
have the stable version, instead of the relatively very buggy Fedora, 
which is only the testbed for the next RedHat/CentOS release.

If there is no installation yet, then what is the system "loading" from?  
The install CD/DVD?  In that case, it is possible that the CD/DVD is 
damaged, /or/ that the lens of the optical drive is either dirty or 
damaged.

For one, GNU/Linux is a UNIX-family operating system and requires being 
installed on one or multiple filesystems that support UNIX/POSIX file 
ownerships and permissions.  vfat (i.e. FAT32) does not support that - 
and neither does NTFS for that matter, in case you were contemplating 
using that as an alternative.

Also, bear in mind that the help you'll be getting is only as good as 
the information you're providing.  "It prints some things to stdout" 
isn't good enough.  We need to know what those "things" are if you want 
us to tell you more.

Fedora is buggy?

Been using Fedora releases since I stopped using Mandrake.
A long, long time.

No bugs to speak of.

    Well if I load a debian ISO onto the CD-RW it seems to work fine. This 
dracut is an on and off thing. Also when windows install a filesystem then 
are blank empty spaces of around 8 MB or so. Eliminating that would that 
cause this problem. I have installed this before but I am doing a clean 
install this time to clean up everything. If list a bunch of errors with the 
squash filesystems too. I will try again and see what I can do. It just 
drops to shell.

I looked at Fedora 20.  It was completely user-unfriendly.  Every
release I have looked at, has been the same.  You need to do it
their way, or not at all.

	I have had problems with Fedora's main releases for quite a while.  20 
would not do anything useful so I looked for alternate
spins of Fedora 20 and got satisfactory results.  After trying a
live spin I decided not to install it.
