All right, I am trying to recover a WD SATA RAID using Ubuntu.

I might have to puchase a Promise SATA RAID card.

Any known issues?

First off, what failed.

The controller or one of the drives?

My guess is the WD RAID controller.

My advice would be to get the identical card if possible
but another brand should work as long as you build your raid in exactly
the same way as the original

Rebuilding the RAID has nothing to do with the operating system itself.
it's all done with the RAID setup utility

The RAID bios should be visible within a second or so of turning the
machine on.

All rght.

Using ubuntu, the e2fsck came out all right.

When trying to mount the drive I get

an unknown type liunx_raid_member error.

Using a Vantac SATARaid controller.

Using a Supermicro MB.

You cannot expect to recover data from a single RAID drive (unless
mirrored of course) until you build your RAID. That is step one.

To get the best help you really need to give details such as RAID number etc

Unless, as another responder has mentioned, the RAID was Linux md
software RAID.

True, the OP really needs to give a lot more details if he expects to
get some actual help.

Were you using the controller to do the RAID, or using linux md?

If the former, then a different make (or even model) RAID controller may
not be able to understand the RAID signature on the drives. A while
back I was told by 3ware that while most 3ware cards could support
arrays created by other 3ware models, the MegaRAID cards could not.
And in this case I agree with philo: try to get as close to your
original hardware as possible to reduce the chance for problems.

If the latter, then you need to make sure you export the drives as bare,
single, or JBOD units. Do *not* let the new controller write the
drives, or your RAID array may be lost. And in this case you might be
better off with a controller that doesn't have any sort of hardware RAID
support, so you can be sure that it won't mess with the drives
accidentally.
