Steel stronger than alloy, You were lucky then (and that luck may have had much to do with the engine design). For most interference engines, the stronger steel valve ends up punching a hole in the top of the piston (usually aluminum alloy). Sometimes the collision also bends the valve stem. Both leading to a significantly higher repair cost.

And the alloy rockers may possibly have been designed to be weak. -- New Socialism consists essentially in being seen to have your heart in the right place whilst your head is in the clouds and your hand is in someone else's pocket.

Presumably that happens because, once the coolant is no longer circulating as the engine is not running, residual heat can exceed some threshold. The car with the belt-driven fan is either designed with > different thresholds, or just hopes for the best. The electric fan is a wonderful invention. You get liberty for placing the radiator and its fan, and the motor. Independent speeds, so if the water is going too hot, the fan just runs faster (no longer needing to downshift to cool the engine). The motor heats up fast. The temperature indicator is always indicating the best temperature and never moves a millilitre. I remember one come back to our home city from the regional capital city: just 50 km with a sierra in between. The water boiled, we had to stop two or three times. The radiator had occlusions, it was not working right. My father had to replace it, which was complicated because the brand had disappeared from Spain and shops were out of spares (Austin-Morris). I think he got one in good shape from a scrap yard. That was the second time. The first was because the radiator was perforated, because the rainwater he used was corrosive. The mechanic explained that special radiator water was sold with additives that impeded corrosion. I remember he placing a washing basin in the middle of the patio in mid rain to collect clean rain water for the car... he said it was the same as distilled water, but gratis. -- Cheers, Carlos. There's an apocryphal story from the time when time-delay headlights were very new and only a few vehicles had them. The story goes that a man drove his Cadillac to a restaurant and parked it. As he was walking toward the restaurant, someone told him his headlights were still on. He had measured the delay and was perhaps counting down the time. He acknowledged the "helpful" other person, turned around, and pointed a finger at the car, just in time for the lights to turn off. The story does not mention him being charged with impersonating a magician. :-) Oh, my 1999 Suburban and Tahoe have belt-driven fans. For the semi-periodic water pump replacements over the years, I should have bought a 36mm wrench and a pin spanner when the first water pump failed. Oh, well. I'd left work at dusk and the drls were bright enough that I didn't think to turn the real headlights on. The cop was skeptical until I demonstrated I did indeed have working tailights when I turned the headlights on. This one has a drl position on the stalk but it's optional.

This is another example of the law of unintended consequences. Thanks to daytime running lights I've noticed an increase in the number of cars driving at night (or at dusk or in the rain) with no tail lights. What I find paradoxical is that since many cars implement DRL using the high-beam filaments, turning your headlight switch to the "on" positition actually _decreases_ the amount of light reaching the eyes of others on the road. Yes, the lights are attenuated somewhat, but on most cars they're still objectionably bright. It was particularly bad on our 1998 Honda CR-V, but that vehicle suffered a mysterious failure (wink, wink) which caused the DRL feature to quit working. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. When always on headlights were stipulated on bikes it was supposed to help them stand out in traffic. DLR took care of that. Is is a bike or a DLR car with a burned out headlight? The US, of course, hasn't gotten around to legalizing 'smart' headlights although they let the HID flame throwers slip through. I've thought about mounting a couple of those LEDs on the bikes that come with a 'for offroad use only' sticker to fight back.

A while ago I went to the local supplier to get a replacement headlamp. After pushing buttons on their little box that guides you to compatible units, I noticed that some of them were marked "legal in Canada and Mexico only". I hope this means that the US authorities have reined in some of the ridiculously bright lights. In fact, the last few times I've driven in the US at night, I've noticed that headlights aren't nearly as objectionable down there (although it gets worse as you get near the border and get a bigger mix of Canadian cars). Recently I received (and gladly filled in) a survey from Transport Canada (our counterpart to the US Department of Transport). It was polling people to see how many of us find modern headlights far too bright. One of the questions asked how we deal with it, and included my workaround: flip the sun visor way down to block oncoming light. If I set it right I can avoid being blinded while still being able to see the wheels and possibly bumper of the car ahead. I can also see pedestrians which I would miss due to dazzle from oncoming cars, so I figure I'm safer this way. As for cars coming up behind me (especially jacked-up pickups shining right into my Honda Civic), I adjust my side mirrors to fry their eyeballs with their own beams. If you'd like, you're welcome to use the term I coined for that
type of headlights:
weapons-grade assault headlights
I doubt turning the side mirrors will cause any (arguably
deserved) adverse effect on the driver behind, because the
distances are enough greater after the round trip. I just aim my
adjustable side mirror at the pavement until the offender is no
longer behind me.
There is one thing that can help a little bit with the side
mirror problem, at least during the day. It does take an
investment of time. It works better if there's only one driver
per vehicle.
- Adjust the mirrors for normal driving.
- Place several sticky-notes on the inside of the front window to
outline where the light from the edge of the mirror goes
through the window when you are sitting in a normal driving
position.
- Fine tune the positions of the sticky-notes.
- On the outside of the window, draw a line with a Sharpie on or
slightly outside of the edges of the sharpies.
- Adjust the Sharpie line until you're sure you have it right.
- Remove (and dispose of) the sticky-notes.
- Trace the Sharpie line onto a piece of paper.
- Cut out a piece of fairly dark window tint film on or slightly
outside the traced line from the Sharpie.
- Apply the window tint film to the inside of the window,
matching it up to align perfectly with the Sharpie line.
- After the adhesive dries, seal the edge of the window tint film
with clear fingernail polish or similar.
- Use isopropyl alcohol to remove the Sharpie lines from the
outside of the window.

But some tailgaters have actually backed off a bit after my treatment. At least I like to think so. I had neither so I bought the cheapest available. Big mistake. I started from Avery ID on the lower end and wound up walking through most of the tunnels since I couldn't see shit. When I got to the 1.66 mile tunnel I'd had enough, turned around, and went back downhill. It isn't a bad ride uphill since the rail grade seldom exceeds 2%. There isn't much ambient lighting where I live so the bicycle headlights stand out. I'm not sure about the blinking taillights though. They attract your attention when there is nothing else but black and there's this thing called target fixation.

There really IS a serious problem with the headlights, especially once it starts to get dark. Is it a car with one light far away, or a MC at point blank range ? Most humans can't tell quickly, and that's DANGEROUS. Worst arrangement - two lights one above the other. Best typical arrangement, one main light and two smaller ones on a light-bar - a visual triangle. NO great fix alas. Just gotta ASSUME they're always out to GET YOU and ride accordingly. Sort of like video game, except you're ground meat if .... Note a gentle 'weave' as you approach intersections really DOES seem to help. Seems to help resolve the 'bad car' -vs- bike perceptual issue. Always did that. Humans are not computers, perception evolved for life on the veldt. That's how it is. Cope or die.
