And where are the start-up sigs coming from ?
   What if THAT fails ?

Daemons can ALWAYS crash - even if you write
them perfectly. The lang libs, the system,
bad garbage collection even ..... 'perfection'
has to be top to bottom, and as complex as
things are these days that's never going to
   happen.

Hmmm ... Shrodinger's App ... with quantum computing
I wonder if a daemon CAN be running and not running
at the same time ....... :-)

A daemon can definitely be running and doing something known only to
itself so as far as doing its job it's not running.

"Doing its job if not running ..." - this is
all getting curiouser and couriouser..... :-)

Quantum computing is pretty crude at this point,
but I was speculating about when it gets broader,
to the point of entertaining some of the weirder
   aspects of the quantum interpretation.

CAN an app be running AND not running ? Maybe ...

does a daemon that does nothing, even exist?

Yes, that's exactly, at the same time, the good point and the bad point
about systemd. The bad point is: it does things that it shouldn't, so it
increases its complexity. The good point is: it's the only one to do it,
all the init system alternatives just remove that without providing any
help.

So agreed, systemd does things an init system shouldn't do, but as it's
the one who launches every other processes, it's the one at the best
place to watch them from start to end.

95% is high but if you exclude the graybeards many Linux users have never

Yes. Now I have found out how to get rid of most of it, its acceptable,
and people have written better init scripts for it...or whatever they
are called.

   Not THAT many :-)

Oh, Arch, if they've got it use 'octopi' - it's
somewhat like 'synaptic', just a tad kludgier.
Very often you just don't KNOW what's all out
there merely using CL utilities whereas things
like synaptic/octopi give you nice clickable
lists of yer options and dependent packages too.

Sort of like Amazon Prime Video telling me about all the shit I didn't
realize I needed?

I have used Synaptic or a similar GUI every now and then. Aisleriot is the
GNOME solitaire collection and that isn't exactly apparent. KPatience is
the KDE equivalent and a little easier to guess.

fwiw, I play Klondike and KPatience's version is nice. At the point where
you've won it automatically moves the cards to the foundation piles. The
GNOME version is manual. Besides KPatience let's you select card faces
with penguins.

Typically I know what I want to install like 'sudo apt install vim-gtk', I
try a command and I get

$ geany
Command 'geany' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install geany

or I'm at the relevant website that has the instructions for installing it
on the various distros.

There was a discussion on the Fedora subreddit that said you should always
use Discover for updates since it does an offline update and will tell you
if you should reboot. The question was why it wants to reboot 9 times out
of ten. I use dnf. Despite almost daily updates 'dnf needs-restarting'
says a reboot is not required although the box has been up 59 days.

If it makes people feel better they should use Discover by all means.

Because... Considering Yast was one of the major selling points for SuSE,
let's do something different. I wonder if zypper still works? Maybe
they'll do like Fedora where /usr/bin/yum and /usr/bin/dnf are symlinks to
dnf5.
