If you knew those rules, reduction to the minimal gates was faster. But
as I never had to design such things, I have forgotten them.

Karnaugh maps? I remember these (as in I remember they'd allow
simplification, and I remember using these, but I didn't recall the
*name*, and had to go check links in another wiki article):

Nothing to do with the Carnot Cycle, even though I believe they are both
pronounced the same.

Lawrence
did University courses involving both

Ah, pronunciation. My attendance in the diff-e course was spotty but
during one of my appearances the TA was talking about Lobetal's Rule. I
had a hell of a time finding that in the index.

At least in American English 'Karnaugh' is not the same as 'Carnot'.

Ah! I did not have that problem, as we pronounced them in Spanish :-P :-D

Or some times in Spanish trying to aproximate English and failing.

I think I saw Carnot in high school. Not in depth. Maybe. Or in 1st course physics in uni.

While we should be grateful for the "theoretical
analysis" MOST of us just totally SKIPPED that.
We worked out the AND/OR/NOR/XOR/NAND/NOR rules
for ourselves with a little experimentation and
put that into our programs. No "theory" - just
"what worked". Took a few minutes.

There have been a number of sub-threads here
suggesting that theory preceded design - but
until VERY recently it wasn't true. Practical
people fucked-around with materials on a hunch
until Something Cool happened. The theoretical
   characterization came LATER.

However with "2-D" and 'quantum' electronic
devices ... well ... that has all changed to
   a fair degree.

Kind of too bad ... cuts out maybe 90% of
new inventors - the math is Just TOO.

Of course even THAT will run out soon ...
   then what ?

Moore WILL have his revenge. Computing tech
really HAS come up against what really looks
to be its final barrier. Parallelization
is great but doesn't work well for everything.

So what we've got - or will soon have - we
have to figure out how to leverage it to
the max because there's no more speed
beyond that. Vast creativity will be
required. Not sure "AI" can deliver that.

And WHEN we reach the peak ... well, it
will be "pretty good", but may not take
   us into The Future.

The universe ISN'T ABOUT US - not in the
least interested in what tricks we want
   to do.

Maybe then the KISS principle will be re-discovered -
over the dead bodies of the hordes of bureaucrats
and other parasites who use gratuitous complexity
to justify their existence.

That might get us a little farther along the road
toward the Malthusian crash.

As I said, I always sucked at formal logic. For me logic is verbal, not
mathematical and I can never remember what all the weird little symbols
mean.

Wirth's 'Digital Circuit Design for Computer Science Students' uses it to
simplify gates. It's all logic after all. I started my career designing
industrial controls with ice cube relays, electromechanical timers, push
buttons, and limit switches. Same thing.

Funny thing is I was never very good at formal logic derivations.

You can tell a book by it's cover. If it has a dragon, it's okay.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compilers:_Principles,_Techniques,_and_Tools

That doesn't always work. The wizard book was interesting in a warped sort
of fashion but being introduced to programming with Scheme might engender
mental illness in later life.

I suppose there's nothing wrong with CS ... but
on the flip, how much good or good stuff comes
   it either ?

CS is just a branch of theoretical math. I'd like

None. Formal programming languages don't contain IO.

My engineering course contained an interesting, but almost completely
useless course in quantum states with respect to how semiconductors
work. Sometimes it was handy when things broke.

Yet a friend in the year below me went on to designing NAND flash in
California...all about quantum level stuff

..whilst another gave up engineering moved to philosophy and became a
successful company director 'The metaphysics of business is...interesting',

You never know when some random fact from University may prove useful...

The classic criticism of pure didactic Pascal was it is a language
supremely capable of telling secrets to itself. iirc before Common Lisp
the original Lisp was just as adept. I/O is messy and impacts the purity
of the language.
