Aluminum foil would do NOTHING with fields
from large motors. Gotta use the 'cookie tin',
   iron box, for that.

   So yea, 'urban legends'.

Might work, but there were smaller devices sold
which made a stronger field. Used to have a Radio
Shack model. Neo magnets rubbed over the disk WILL
   erase/unstructure them - but we're talking a higher
   field yet.

The RS unit was 60hz ... though I think a somewhat
higher frequency would work better, maybe 400hz.

I see several variations on this theme but I've never used one. I've used
coils at 60 Hz to demagnetize but not this scheme. In a pinch one of the
old soldering guns will work. I recently finished a project that had a lot
of small screws down to 1.5 mm and magnetic screwdrivers were very handy.

Just rub a neo magnet down the screwdriver, a single
pass will often do. Then it'll hold screws nicely.

The 'device' ... umm ... ought to magnetize fine, but
seems to just use the other magnet pole to demagnetize,
which probably won't be very reliable.

To degauss you need a rapidly alternating field. 50/60hz
minimum but higher freq would be better.

A couple of power FETs and a coil and you could likely
build your own. Just wire as a class-C push-pull amplifier
and you could employ a simple large-ish resistor to limit
the current (it'll get kinda hot).

Overkill - auto-parts companies now do sell induction
heater kits that come with several coils. Mostly to
replace a gas torch for loosening stuck bolts and such.
   Prices aren't TOO bad.

That was my feeling. I have a good supply of neo magnets salvaged from my
electric toothbrush. Those little suckers are strong.

I have a huge stockpile from a surplus store -
   including 2x2" cubes. Dangerously strong.

In any case I've checked and they WILL nuke
   floppies.

Floppies always were crap right from the get-go.

50/50 chance of a floppy written on one drive working on another, played
very badly with CRT monitor degaussing systems....

As soon as I could it went onto CD or DVD, and these days I simply have
a rolling bard drive system, as DVDs were not big enough. Error free
digital duplication is almost infinitely useable.

Floppies were not THAT great - but the alternatives
were a giant stack of punch cards or big rolls of
paper/mag tape. Let's just say they were "relatively
   great".

These days we can get Tb SD drives for under $100,
USB thumbs to 2Tb for about $125. A huge diff in
removable storage since the 70s eh ?

Never actually SAW any of those.

The link claims 120/240mb storage, which kind
of means a species of "zip disk".

In any case, a close pass with a neo mag will
   nuke any such media.

Floppies/Zips were obsoleted by CD/DVD-RW and
those were obsoleted by SD cards. However we
older folks still have a lot of ancient, but
interesting, stuff on floppies that we'd
kind of like to get at as needed.

DID get my USB floppy adapter to work, did
   list the necessary format/mount commands.

However not all of my old floppies will read
properly. MAY just be Too Old alas ...

And NO external adapters for 5-1/4 floppies
   at all anymore ...

And what about my 8" floppies ???!!! :-)

Archivists are freaking now - SO much 'historic'
data on these old media, but NO modern hardware
to read them with. Isn't just data disks ...
   videotapes and corp/govt/NASA formats. We
created a highly volatile 'history' - and now
it's going away fast. Ink & parchment - THAT
lasts awhile. Clay tablets ... 7000 years ...

We need some 'impractical' media for long long
term preservation, something we can copy the
current stuff into, something not dependent
on common hardware or 'cloud' replication.
Laser-etched holograms in sapphire maybe ?
   That'd last 100,000 years easy.

"Glasses" are not as stable as they seem - extreme
long term anyhow. They're really just very thick
   fluids.

Aluminum oxide ... that'll last pretty good.
Diamond is better but way too expensive.

Hum. I can't say if they said glass or crystal. I am unable to
differentiate.

Ah, I located the entry. In Spanish:

Yep, they will. But you don't need a neo magnet to nuke a floppy. A
regular old style magnet will nuke a floppy just fine.

You /might/ need a neo if you ever get around to trying to nuke one of
the SuperDisk floppies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperDisk

Does dmesg show any errors?

What does badblocks say to it?

I've used badblocks on many of mine and a high amount of them was
faulty.

Normal, as the default was to directly have a file system like fat32 on
them.

Use mkfs.vfat <dev> to format them.

Should be possible, I have a USB controller for regular floppy drives,
so the old drives can just be connected to that card and then to USB.

Works, but is not shown as a regular floppy drive in the system.

I have no experience with that, but I can say that we did not put
partitions on floppies.

You might try "mformat" from "mtools". However, the manual says this:

Description
The mformat command is used to add an MS-DOS
file system to a low-level formatted diskette.

On another paragraph it says

X formats the disk as an XDF disk. See
section XDF, for more details. The disk
has first to be low-level formatted us-
ing the xdfcopy utility included in the
fdutils package. XDF disks are used for
               instance for OS/2 install disks.

I don't have "xdfcopy" installed, but the manual can be found here:

https://man.he.net/man1/xdfcopy

Name
xdfcopy - copy and format XDF disks in Linux

So maybe this is not the tool to low format floppies for FAT.

So I asked chatgpt. It says to use "fdformat".

   fdformat /dev/fd0

Also

   superformat /dev/fd0

can create weird formats. So it says to use:

   fdformat /dev/fd0 # Low-level format
   mformat a:

But then says instead you can use:

   mkfs.msdos /dev/fd0 # Creates a FAT filesystem directly

Most of those seem to be limited to traditional drives.
fdformat docs say so - and recs ufiformat for USB drives.

That does go through the steps - but the result is unusable
   and unmountable.

I've used USB flops with Linux boxes before, no probs.

Now a story:

How are they formatted ? Most of mine are formatted for
use with MS-DOS. A long time ago, I had one DOS diskette
I wanted to get an important doc off of.

When I tried to mount it under Linux, it crashed the
kernel on mount, I tried a few times. I tried using dd,
same.

I had a very old desktop with NetBSD and the same happened.
But NetBSD had just added the rump kernel. So I decided
to try it out. The rump kernel also crashed many times,
but I could keep trying because NetBSD itself did not
crash.

After a few tries, I was able to copy bits of the document.
Some copies failed or crashed the rump kernel, but after
a few tries I got about 80% to 90% of the doc.

So if you have the time, maybe try that. But the diskette
need to be formatted for use with MS-DOS .

Do you have the read-only tag set on the disc?

I have a usb floppy drive that I use on a daily basis and have never
seen this issue. Though, I'm not sure what purpose would be to partition
a floppy. I mean, why?

Anyway, I use a floppy disc as a primary method of storage for my daily
files. All the larger multimedia files and pdf's are on an external hdd,
but those are rarely, if ever, accessed.
