Supposedly there are 24 different sparrow species in this state but
they're all LGBs to me. Most of them are New World sparrows like the
American tree sparrow. There are European house sparrows that were
imported but the finches tend to eat their lunch so to speak.

The problem would be collecting labeled images of raccoons.

Separating cats from dogs is sort of a 'hello world' for image recognition
and the dataset is available. Raccoons not so much. That's a real problem
for supervised learning. Not only do you need a lot of raw data but it has
to be labeled, which at this point means a human is deciding what is a dog
or cat.

There has been a lot of bitching since Qualcomm bought Arduino but it's
led to at least one new product.

https://store-usa.arduino.cc/products/uno-q

It's the equivalent of a RPi 5 with a Pico 2 hung off it. There is a model
with 4 GB of RAM in the pipeline which is still lighter than the Pi5.

Raccoons never forget. I probably will shut down the feeder for the
winter. A couple of the cats are getting chubby and we can't have that in
MAHA.

I thought 'chubby' was only against the law in Hollywood ...

Anyway, raccoons have rather short lifespans, so you
can replace the feeder in a few years.

Smart as they otherwise are, raccoons can NOT figure
out automobiles ... always walk straight in front
   of them, oblivious, then obliviated.

Actually a lot of beasties are very bad with
automobiles ... opossums and armadillos esp.
Dogs think they're wildebeests or something
and try to 'bite at the heels' (tires) to
herd the things. Cats wait until the last
damned instant and then try to dart in front
of them. Squirrels tend to do the 'owl-avoidance
dance' - and wind up decapitated by the
   transmission-mount bracket. Bugs get hypnotized
   by headlights.

Odd how, without even trying, we invented
something SO contrary to millions of years
   worth of evolved instincts ...

I'm not sure how she does it but the cat recognizes both my car and the
bikes. Even before I turn into the driveway she is off the deck like a
shot to greet me. She doesn't respond to other vehicles. If she is
wandering around in a neighbor's yard she also hurries back.

I don't know about raccoons, particularly in an urban environment. The
urban deer seem to have figured cars out. There was an amusing dashcam
shot on reddit a few weeks ago of a happy little deer family in a
crosswalk like good citizens. That's better than the humans dressed like
ninjas that cross the road wherever they damn well please. They get hit
and the city drops the speed limit another 5 mph rather than letting
natural selection take its course.

My dog did that. She howled when my dad entered the garden in his car,
even earlier, so everybody knew.

Um ... would still tend to buy either a microcontroller
OR a CPU. Don't like weird un-optimised mixes.

There was an earlier Ard with a (Linux-capable?) CPU
spliced on. Didn't buy those either.

Yeah, Arduino had aspirations to the industrial controller market. Those
were rather expensive as opposed to the $44 consumer friendly version.
It's interesting it uses a ST Micro MCU. ST is very popular for commercial
embedded development and has its own IDE. I think part of the reason it
hasn't caught on with hobbyists is the selection process. You buy a Pico,
you get a Pico. You buy a ST you spend half a day trying to figure out the
part number for what you need.

You can go nuts trying to find THE Perfect Thing.

Better to embrace the KISS principle and pick
something Good Enough, something you can lightly
   hammer into what you need.

Pico's are KISS ... an omni-tool that can be
easily bent to fit a huge variety of needs -
   AND inexpensive.

Hmmm ... had one boss who didn't want Linux around
because it was FREE - equated Expensive with Better
and, of course, expensive let him pad the dept budget.

Hopefully not literally hammered :)
Anyways, I agree with KISS

The type who do that always annoy me, since thats how we end up dealing
with buggy as hell software nobody can fix because the company doesn't
care and also refuse to let the end user anywhere near the internals...

The project would escalate since the coon tends to show up a 4 AM. I'd
wind up using PyTorch to create a model to differentiate raccoons from
cats since random cats also show up otherwise I could use a PIR sensor.
I've got a bunch of those. I might have to throw some skunk images into
the training set too. Zapping a skunk might not be the best idea.

The kibble feeder depredations make enough noise to wake me up so I can go
out and shoot his furry ass with a pellet gun. That's become more
difficult. He used to stand there and say "What the hell do you want?" but
now he exits rapidly.

They're cute and all but they're destructive little bastards.

Raccoons are becoming domestic pets

I definitely don't need a trash panda as a pet. The semi-feral cats are
bad enough. The old, arthritic Persian does have house privileges but she
is more like a taxidermy exhibit that moves around sometimes.

I think they have been used semi-domesticated as pets by people who
are rich enough to pay for the damage their "pet" may inflict. Raccoons are
possibly capable of domestication thru the same method as foxes have
been turned into expensive pets. That is to say by selective breeding over
a relatively few generations for the proper behavioral traits. These will
be like dogs which is the domesticated version of wolves. Thus the wild
versions of foxes or raccons will not be the same "race" as the
domesticated.
Likely they will be capable of interbreeding with the wild but they will
have different markings and so forth.

Domesticated animals can have colors and so forth that might not
contribute to the survival of animals but which fanciers of the exotic
pets will select for in breeding as we see in dogs or cats.

A couple of years ago a Manx cat showed up. The cat had problems but
seemed happy until a well meaning neighbor took her to the vets. That was
the one way trip I thought it would be.

Breeding them is controversial since a variety of problems go along with
the mutation and many kittens die or are put down at birth.

I assume the Manx was a case of taking Fluffy out to the country, kicking
them out of the car, and wishing them good luck.

Like in those movies, raccoons would probably be
   a good starting-point for IQ-enhancement genetic
technology. Then there are apes ... but DO use
bonobos and orangs instead of chimps. Some octopi
could be good investments. Dolphins/orcas ... sorry,
no hands = no future alas. We DO know the most
critical genes/repeats required for better brains
   these days, so.

Bet someone, probably in China, is doing this
already. They're not so squeamish about 'mistakes'
there ... into the incinerator, try again .....

Giant killer Death Rrabbits strapped with explosives, fed on crystal
