UK has been - apart from bats - Rabies free for all my life. Only victims caught it abroad. India and Africa mostly. The last case of rabies in the UK was in June 2025, when a woman died after being scratched by a dog in Morocco. In Great Britain, the last case of *indigenous* rabies in a terrestrial (land) animal occurred in *1922*. Not just focal plane shutter, but those shutters that never open
completely, but only a travelling strip, which is how a shutter would
achieve high speeds, open only a fraction of the frame at a time.

So, you either have to go to an insanely slow speed with FPS cameras or find a way to add a conventional bulb flash to the equation. According to my source there are 'flat' flash profile bulbs - pretty consistent light for a little while. This is what you'd need for a FPS if you needed 1/125 or so. Photo-diode, mostly shielded, hooked to a cheapo latch circuit that shoots power into the bulb. Just a few components.

Probably would not be hard to make an adapter - assuming your 'modern camera' even HAS some kind of external contacts. Everybody is used to the latest greatest electronic cameras with 1/10000 or better shutters and such. "The Art" however is sometimes in how to manipulate those older designs to good artistic or tech effect. The mantra now is "I'll just use PhotoShop on it later". That's not "photography", just "image manufacturing" IMHO. Even worse now, you just get an 'AI' to fake everything and then claim it as your own 'art'.

Aluminum forms a tight layer of hexagonal oxide while MgO2 is a flaky powder. Flashbulbs are more associated with the B&W days. Can also decompose CO2. The best way to put out magnesium is to pour sand on it.

NOT sure how the 'detonation' mechanism worked exactly however. I'll have to research. Cleaning out my office I came across some more traditional flashbulbs from the 1940s. Put a 6v battery across one and it flashed just fine.

Every frame in the sequence was exposed on the lower half only, ruining the sequence. The duration of the flash was short enough that as long as it went off at any time the shutter was open for the entire frame it would have worked. When setting up the camera I would test the TTL metering by aiming the strobe directly into the lens and firing point-blank with the aperture wide open. If things were working properly I would get a flash so brief it was hardly visible. I loved through-the-lens metering, especially when shooting macro. Macro needs a small aperture - hence a lot of light - to get any depth of field at all. So I would blast away at f/22 and let the TTL sort it out - most of the time the strobe would do a full dump or close to it, but on lighter subjects the TTL would quench the strobe when it had gotten enough light for a proper exposure. FPS are a good idea - and you saw them in a lot of cameras. However they are NOT great for e-flash. Have a Pentax 6x7 medium format ... FPS ... ker-CHUNK ! Now for some you COULD purchase, at high price, a lens on a conventional shutter. I guess now you're supposed to go all-electronic and photoshop the results. Seems in-genuine somehow. The older film cameras, there was ART there :-) Still have a couple of 4x5 cameras - but the thought of having to do all the chemistry - plus an ultra-rez scanner and/or enlarger outfit - is just TOO MUCH now. There's at least one company that sometimes sells 8/16 gigabit CCD backs that fit 4x5s but they don't even start to suggest the PRICE :-) Once had a 5x7 "field camera" - about the biggest that's handy to deal with. Sold it alas. THE sharpest pic I ever took used a 4x5 and Technical Pan (+ technidol) film. Didn't matter how much you enlarged it ... no grain. THINK it was f8 at 1/60 with a cable release. Some of the 'chromogenic' films are pretty damned good ... but the image tone is a bit odd and the chemistry is extra complicated. Still like plain Tri-X in medium/large format. It's still easy to get and the tone is good. Plus-X was better for portraits, but that went away and T-Max doesn't look as good. Do miss Verichrome Pan ... 'dual emulsion' ... with its huge tonal range. Great for landscapes - detail in the bright AND shadows. In any case, there's something about the look of medium/large-format chemical film I've never quite seen with electronics and even vapor-dep printers.

Typically 1/60 or 1/30. Yes, the slower speeds (for DSLR's, typically 1/200 or below) are what is used, and the firing of the actual flash is syncronized such that it occurs while the shutter is fully open.
