Eight-space tabs are unreasonably wide for indenting C source code. Over the years I've fallen into the practice of alternating four spaces with tabs. If left side indent is done with tabs, then you can set: au BufRead,BufNewFile *py,*pyw,*.c,*.h set tabstop=2 au BufRead,BufNewFile *.py,*pyw set shiftwidth=2 au BufRead,BufNewFile *.py,*.pyw set expandtab And you get "two space wide tabs". And rboman can set: au BufRead,BufNewFile *py,*pyw,*.c,*.h set tabstop=4 au BufRead,BufNewFile *.py,*pyw set shiftwidth=4 au BufRead,BufNewFile *.py,*.pyw set expandtab And get "four space wide tabs". And you both get your prefered width (two spaces vs. four spaces) with no change to the source file itself.

In early turbopascal, I defined the tab to be 2 spaces, and indented everything with tabs, never spaces. Then if I wanted to indent by 3 spaces, I only had to change the editor config. When I got into Apple Mac programming, I set the editor (the much-feared Macintosh Programmer’s Workshop) to put tab stops every 4 spaces. I carried this over to Emacs on Linux (no more floppies by that time). Then I realized that tabs were a pain to work with. So I reconfigured Emacs to insert spaces every time I pressed the tab key, to move to the next step in multiples of 4 columns. And Emacs also has commands to convert between spaces and tabs, so I could get rid of the tabs in old files as I needed to update them.

Don't modern IDE's give you the ability to reformat white space to your liking. Git can have pre-commit hooks to format code to pre agreed standards before commit, to avoid bogus diffs. It all sounds like an argument from the previous millennium.

I'm wondering now how many are using whatever to write code are using PROPORTIONAL FONTS ... Now there you'd kind of need to use tabs. Gimme nano or Featherpad or something ultra-simple instead most of the time. The Code::Blocks IDE isn't TOO awful and if doing Lazarus you kind of need to use its IDE so you can work on the forms. If just doing raw Pascal then you don't. But the 400+ line mini-app I just spiffed up in Python, all nano.
