Hi All,

Seems for a while Adobe only had an Acrobat Reader 9
for Linux and only 32 bit.  Now nothing (or I just
can't find it).

Is Acrobat reader just gone from Linux now?  How do you
substitute for it?

Me personally, I paid for Qoppa's PDF Studio Pro.  And
I use the hell out of it and love.  Worth every cent
of the 125.00 U$D.

For a customer with FC21, I just installed PDF Studio's
demo (writes demo across the screen, but you can use
it as a read just fine).

Yep, they have discontinued it at least 1-2 years ago.

It's certainly not gone, just that support was dropped

I was more or less forced to install it when I wanted to read a PDF 
issued by the US Government.

Even though it was a PDF it was some unusual proprietary form that could 
not be read by any other PDF reader

evince, poppler, pdftk... -- there are *many* alternitives to Acrobat Reader. 
I have always found that Acrobat Reader to be just about the *worst* PDF 
reader and it is a something of a bloated 'pig'.  Modern version of Firefox 
even have built-in support for PDF, so there isn't even any reason for Adobe's 
browser plug in anymore either.

The one downside to PDF Studio is that it won't read
Dynamic XFA documents.  So, I have to use my old
Acrobat Reader for them.

An example (Nevada Sales Tax form):

I've had success using PdfTK to deal with US GOV (IRS) 'fill in form' PDF

No.  It is 2meg and I have dialup, so I need to go somewhere with faster 
Internet access and try it there.

PdfTk does not seem to handle this file.  xpdf does not like it either.

Hi Robert,

Qoppa (PDF Studio) told me they decided not to support it
as even Adobe wants to drop Dynamic XFA.   I have asked the
state to change from Dynamic XFA to something else
and they have responded positively, but ...

Thanks for mentioning 'fill in govmnt forms'!
How does that system work; obviously designed by the big software vendors?
Eg. when you need to 'attatch' several text-files to the pdf-form.

Must you convert each such text-file to pdf?

Or can you append the text-files as plain-text to the email-carrier which
carries the pdf-attatchment/s?

Acrobat reader uses a GUI hack to fill in the form, which once filled in can 
be saved as a static PDF file.  All pointy-clicky.

PdfTK can extract the form's variables as a text file, then one can use text 
processing software to generate a fill in mapping (eg lines of 
variable=value).  Then PdfTK can take the fill in PDF and the variable mapping 
file and generate a filled in PDF file (what Acrobat reader would output), 
which you can send to the IRS (or whatever).

Hi Robert,

One of the things I love about PDF Studio is the ability to
go into Document --> Document Properties --> Security (tab)
--> Usage Rights --> Clear.

Then I can write all over those US GOV forms, yellow highlight,
create fill in blocks and check marks in the pub worksheets,
add pages, remove pages.  I love it!

One of the totally *insane* things about PDF is because it is a standard 
format with a public description of the format, *none of the DRM* used in PDFs 
is really enforceable (not even passwords / encryption).

(Some of the same is true for DVDs as well: Linux DVD player software is all
effectively Region 0: one can play *any* region's DVDs with a Linux DVD player
program.)

And therefor it does not qualify as a technological measure that
effectively controls access to a work under USA copyright law.
