I do miss the sea. When I lived in New Hampshire it was about 10 minutes 
away. The White Mountains were about an hour in the other direction. Then 
the liberals from Massachusetts started moving in.

I live on the farm where I grew up in the hills of Central New York, 
third generation of the family to own and operate the farm.

I've visited seaside areas, but find beaches incredibly boring. I'd 
rather be in a small boat on the St. Lawrence River, fishing for bass 
and walleyes.

But I love where I live. President Clinton vacationed in the area the 
last two summers of his time in office, and called the area 
"spectacularly beautiful." I believe it's the only thing he ever said 
that I agreed with...

I wasn't thinking primarily about beaches.

I had a little rowing dinghy and it was a fun place. Sometimes I'd row 
down the Cocheco but you had to watch the tides.

I liked that too. Catch it right and you could ski along by the ocean. The 
snow didn't last long but it was fun while it lasted. A friend and I used 
to sail in his yawl out of Kittery. Made it to St. John NB one summer. 
That's another place you'd best be watching the tides.

I've got a kayak but right here the rivers are a one way trip. Great 
cardio workout though. You can paddle like hell upstream and not go 
anywhere. The lakes are infested with motorboats and jet skis.

Getting a room there is prohibitive. Many of the workers that go there 
from other places can not get a place, and sleep in their cars, or 
camps, or other makeshift places.

The place needs a lot of workers for everything, for example hotel staff 
to tend to the vacationers, but then the workers can not rent anywhere 
to live.

Indeed. The net result of that should be to make holidaymakers pay more, 
then pay the workers more.

Or do what the channel islands do: have a stock of housing which cannot 
be sold or rented to people from 'off island'

That only makes the house owners charge more for lodgings.

That would do.

Well, no, because many workers are off-islanders. There are not enough 
islanders to man the island. Anything from hoteliers, repair people, 
teachers, nurses. The islanders already have places to live in.

	Actually though not as active as before there are several LUGs around 
the San Francisco Bay Area.  I am a member of the SF-LUG aka Linux Users 
Group.  I do not
post to the mailing list due to disagreement with the administrator of 
that list.

:)  I've been using Linux since 1992.  Was thinking more along the
lines of volunteering, or even starting some kind of Linux support
thing. Reading about Linux Repair Cafes has been inspiring -- there
are a lot out there! Maybe we need one up here in Sonoma County, there
isn't one here yet.

My system details are in my signature...bought this Linux workstation
from System 76 a few years ago, and I've been very happy with it.
Only had one problem with the SPDIF optical audio, which I don't
use anymore in favor of USB first, then now the audio channel over
my DisplayPort to the monitor's speakers.

I would characterize the email support from System76 as competent
and friendly.  They are a great group, I hope they stay around.

I went to the Linux seminar at the library today. The turnout was rather 
disappointing -- two people. There were three yesterday but I thought 
there might be more on a Saturday than 2:30 PM on Friday.

I did get to see Mint Cinnamon in action and I can see why it's popular 
with Windows refugees. The guy running the seminars has only be using 
Linux for a couple of months and it was interesting to see a relative 
newbie's approach. He brought a terminal up at one point but didn't do 
anything with it.

My Spanish literacy isn't great but I only see reasons for moving to 
Zorin, not a discussion of other possibilities. The person leading the 
seminar converted to Linux a couple of months ago when the library 
realized many of its machines weren't capable of Win11. 

He looked at both Zorin and Mint. He said he chose Mint because Zorin 
seemed bare bones and Mint offered easier customization. I think he will 
cover the Zorin install in future seminars also.

I didn't want to muddy the waters so I didn't say much. Better to give the 
N00bs limited choices. I don't run it but I think Fedora with the Cinnamon 
DE would look at lot like Mint with Cinnamon.

Given that the target audience is people with older Win10 boxes that can't 
make the jump, it shouldn't make a difference. He said after it updated 
Mint's kernel was 6.8 something. My Ubuntu 25.04 is 6.14.0, and the Fedora 
42 is 6.17.4. I'm not running the latest, greatest Nvidia GPU or other 
cutting edge hardware so it makes little difference. That's probably the 
case for most people moving.
