[Are those what are/were called "mild > hybrids"?] start-stop system. I had one, and I liked it; an Opel Corsa diesel. It saves some fuel on city traffic. It just stops the motor when you are stopped in neutral. Mine restarted the motor after a few minutes, or of course, when footing the clutch. It is not an hybrid. I saw another model from Peugeot that used a secondary battery for this system. Some cars use the alternator to start. > > >> manual cars are smaller and cheaper. >> > I think so, still, at least for basic models. The starter is being used probably 10 times as much as cars that don't stop and start at every light. A mechanic friend pointed out that there is also 10 times as great a probability that you're going to break a tooth on the flywheel. Looks like some people have actually been giving this some thought. I guess I've just become too jaded by decades of exposure to shitty software design. I'm saving those references for when I have time to read more of them. I am gratified to see that my 10x estimate is on the money. AI will make it not only 'worse' but far more incomprehensible. What DOES it do and WHY ? Nobody will KNOW with AI-designed software. It's already beyond most human comprehension. Two or three years ... As for "SWAG" ... nothing new there. It'll just get Even Worse, fast. For fun, and because it was cheap, I bought a CHAT subscription. $20 ... not so bad. Had it do a few fun images - plus a non- blocking server in Python. Haven't fully tested that yet, but LOOKS ok. Not so much different from human-writ examples we can find online. Frankly 'servers' are more traditionally writ in 'C' - and have done some - but for lower-speed stuff Python will do fine. That's all I need now. DO look into 'threaded' and 'dynamically threaded' servers - very highest performance. Not AS easy to follow, but for outward-facing servers with high-volume, still The Best.

That would get into big bucks. It had a 'normal' pinion starter (i.e. with teeth) but when it did the stop/start trick, it used the alternator as a secondary starter, and the start was much quicker than a cold start, so it turned the engine via the ribbed 'fan' belt, therefore no teeth to break. It had rules for when it would use stop/start (oil temp not too cold, battery charge not too low, aircon not working too hard, etc)

There is some logic in that. However it'd sure be NICE to have a car that'd hold up really well for 200k miles or so. Toyotas ? Maybe worth the extra $$$. >> A mechanic friend pointed out that there is also 10 times >> as great a probability that you're going to break a tooth >> on the flywheel. That would get into big bucks. What, with modern design/engineering they can't make a robust flywheel ???????? The flywheels would not fall apart. The valve train would not fall apart. Even the damned starter motor - it could be replaced quick cheap and easy. What the fuck HAPPENED - and WHY did we put up with it ??????? Past time for a new American brand - something truly "robust" and dead functional.

I have switched to Toyota this time, not quite the finish of Audi or Lexus, and not /that/ much cheaper to buy, but cheapest compact SUV to insure. >>> A mechanic friend pointed out that there is also 10 times >>> as great a probability that you're going to break a tooth >>> on the flywheel. If a mechanic encounters one stop/start car with a broken tooth on the flywheel, he'll tend to think they're all liable to do the same, where as I explained, plenty of them will use the alternator as a motor to start via the belt anyway. > USA cars, 1959, WORKED. Trouble is, because of the extra metal, and the design effort needing to
be paid for, you'd end up with something costing more for the same
(possibly even slightly worse because heavier) performance - which
wouldn't sell. Sure, people'd get their money back eventually - but
would have to keep the car (or other consumer product) long enough to
see it, and many can't look that far ahead - and that's before the
modern obsession with always having the latest. ("I don't change my
'phone every time the bell rings" - Sir David Attenborough.)
(You can leave the "American" out - same applies everywhere.)
So there's little incentive for the manufacturers to develop such a
product. There _would_ be a market - but not big enough to get the
economies of scale. (Plus, the manufacturers _like_ us to buy new every
X years, of course.)
Another alternative would be to have reliability much as it is now, but
have parts much more easily replaceable - such as engines; truly slot-in
replacements. But, again, there's no incentive for manufacturers to do
that, and some incentive for them not to.

In the EU there is much the incentive for start-stop cars. The gas
emissions in the city cycle part officially prescribed test is much lower.

You actually had a fan moved by a belt? I have not seen that in forty years, here (AFAIK) all the fans are electric. Unless "fan belt" is just the name. Typically the belt moves the alternator, the water pump, maybe the air conditioner compressor... Some brands had the bright idea of having a cam shaft rubber belt submerged in oil (groan). -- Cheers, Carlos. ES🇪🇸, EU🇪🇺;

we tend to call it a fan belt even when its really an auxiliiary drive belt
Types of Vehicles Equipped with Viscous Fans
Classic and Modern Rear-Wheel Drive Cars: Many traditional RWD
sedans and sports cars (such as older Mercedes-Benz models like the
Mercedes-Benz W108/W109, BMW/ZRoadster RWD platforms, and various
classic European or Japanese tourers) rely on a belt-driven mechanical
viscous fan.
Off-Road and 4WD SUVs: Rugged, utility-focused 4x4s—most famously
older Land Rover variants (like the 300TDI and V8 models), Toyota Land
Cruisers, Jeeps, and Nissan Patrols—use viscous fans because they
deliver high, reliable airflow during slow-speed rock crawling or heavy
idling where electric fans might struggle.
Light Commercial & Sprinter Vans: Delivery and utility vans (such
as Mercedes-Benz Sprinters) frequently utilize viscous fan clutches to
handle heavy payload heat management.
Heavy-Duty Trucks & Commercial Vehicles: Long-haul semi-trucks,
medium-duty delivery trucks, agricultural tractors, and construction or
mining machinery heavily rely on viscous or electronically modulated
viscous fan drives for massive cooling capacity

yes, Cam belts are quiet, in oil they are even quieter, They have even

Belts and interference engines aren't a good combination. I had a Geo (rebranded Suzuki) with a serpentine belt. I replaced it at 80k to be on the safe side.
