Now I remember.  There was a time when I did play DVDs on my 1GHz 
computer, not much but I could.  I can't even remember what I did to do 
that, either I did have to do something simple or Slackware at the time 
did it out of the box.

But then my DVDROM drive started generating endless error messages, just 
playing a bit would cause a lot of messages.  And so I gave up, a few 
months later got a replacement drive, and I don't remember ever trying a 
DVD since.

I should fix that, especially since i'm now using a compuer 3 times as 
fast and with 4 times the RAM.

Yeah.  Limp with xine better than running limp and gmplayer, but I
still go for a bit, then start getting jerks and stalls and then error
msgs to the effect "too many" bytes?/packets?/something? are
accumulating and I gotta stop it fer a minute, then it runs OK/smooth again
fer a bit.  Slack 13.37 jes consistently jerks along like youtube on too little
bandwidth.

I'm gonna spring fer an i7 rig, even if I gotta build it myself.  I
figure I only need cpu, mobo, RAM, and a HDD (sata, right?).

If you are trying to play HD stuff, only then you will need a new 
computah. If it's just the usual LO-res SD DVD thingy, a IDE drive will 
do. Perhaps you should also use a different xorg video driver. The xine 
output modules also make a huge difference. AFAIK xshm is the slowest, 
xv is a bit better and xvmc is using hardware sopport of your GFX 
card(but mighty not be available/depends on gfx driver). which one are 
you using?

Yes, changing the video driver in xine helps a lot.  In my case, using
the XVideo driver made DVD-watching possible at least 10 years ago.
Go into the "video" tab of the xine setup dialog, and play with
different drivers until you find one that works well.

video rate on a game I play went from 2 frames a second to 25 by 
changing video card.. (from intel onboard to cheapest nvidia)

Flash was much faster.

You need memory and cpu power to play videos full screen, and, if 
possible an advanced video card

     A newer video card might be enough. Anything in the nvidia line newer
than the 8x00 series is more than adequate to decode 99% of the HD content
out there. The rest of the box can be completely craptacular.

     A lot of low profile HTPCs are based on this kind of setup.
