Ian, you shouldn't need to FTP it or download it from a BBS at this point. There are many distros available on the web! Try Ubuntu, for example:

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Let me know if you need any help!

Is that really you, Natural Philosopher? Are you really joining a
response to a post that was made in 1994?

That's me! I posted the original in 1994 when I was just 14 years old. Almost 19 years later, I make my living doing development on Linux. So even clueless newbies like my 14 year old self have hope.

I think after my original post, I did find the Slackware boot/root floppies, but didn't get much further.

I put a link to my original post on Facebook yesterday and Mr. Smith decided to have a little fun. I'm an Ubuntu user already, but thanks for the suggestion!

Do you not know that the standard Ubuntu installation contains spyware,
or have you succeeded in disabling that, as well as the zeitgeist

I am still a mostly happy Slackware Linux user today! Just installed KDE
4.10 and things are looking good.

Back in the day when I was 13 or so and trying to get Linux installed,
OpenBSD was the only thing that I could work on my Laptop.

Very nice :D. My first usenet post is probably only a few months ago.

I was an ubuntu fan at one point. Can't beat free cd's and free

Probably to troll you.

At first, I was :/ "Not another necro-post..."

Then, I thought ;D "Ah, he's trolling. Nice one."

I haven't been on newsgroups that long, so 1994 is the best I've seen
for on-topic necro-posting. And a nice trolling it was :)

I think in 1994, AOL was still sending out the software on floppy disk.

And of course, any decent distribution back then was likely still on
floppy disk.

I saw the floppies still being offered in the freebies rack at my
local grocery as late as September 1450, 1993 when we moved here.

What an evil PS1 you have! What mean those '[0]' and '[$]' in second
line?

p.s. I have PS1 like this too. But it's for logins with no $DISPLAY.

The last command's exit code and \$, I guess?

FWIW, I'm using a simpler prompt:

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot) }[\u@\h] \W\$ '

	Or, should I need timestamps:

PS1='${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot) }[\u@\h] $(printf x%08x "$(date +%s)") \W\$ '

\W is quite apt for me, given that I may occasionally have to
	visit something like /home/public/users/ivan/download/svn-sync/,
	or /home/private/users/ivan/private/slides/debian-apt-2012/.

Not the exit code but the number of the tty. In an X11 terminal
session, it's only a number, because those are pseudo-terminal slaves.
In character mode sessions, it prints e.g. "tty1".

That's why I have the $PS1 split out over two lines. That way, I can
always see the full path without that it consumes screen space I could
use for typing commands. :-)

I also have a newline ("\") at the beginning of the $PS1, so that
there's always a blank line between the output of the last command and
the prompt, which makes it easier for me to read.
