Ah, still just that one, I'd hope a couple more projects would come
up. Is NetBSD still trying to contribute to X11 via Freedesktop?

Not a clue. The BSDs are one more rabbit hole than I want to deal with.

I'd hope more wouldn't come up, since it'd only cause compatibility
issues, but here's another new one, which sounds like it's not
for me:

Bear in mind ... do we WANT a bunch of X11, or even
   Wayland, forks ???

Sometimes a somewhat poor standard is better than
20 random 'standards' with different rules/details
   and their OWN problems.

   Just sayin'

X11 isn't "perfect" - but NOTHING is gonna be.
   These aren't the CP/M, pre-CP/M days, it's all
become VERY complicated. I'd rather have one
   or two 'complications' than 20.

Yep, that's what I'm saying too. That project gives a mixed message
about their intentions for compatibility. They say "Replacing the
Xorg server" is a "non-goal", yet they say they're open to
extending the X11 protocol. Which means they'll need their own xlib
library for GUI programs/toolkits to link against, and those
programs/toolkits might at some point no longer build with the Xorg
xlib as well, or even if they do, some distro packages might only
be built for the Pheonix xlib.

I'd prefer if protocol changes were left off the table at this
point, X11 already has extensions to tick all the major boxes such
as handling OpenGL and video. Wayland is already reinventing the
wheel if that's what you want.

On the up side, the site did point out this Wayland -> X11 "bridge"
project, which is promising for if/when programs like Firefox drop
X11 support:

My sore point with Wayland is that it doesn't seem to work if the
machine doesn't have 3D.

Mine, and it is a recent machine. The hardware is capable, AMD, but I
have not installed any proprietary drivers and vmware complains "there
is no 3D support from the host".

... yes.

And worse, I think a bit of that may get done on software if the
hardware doesn't support all of it, so if your response is this, it's
making me wonder: is Wayland really dependent on hardware acceleration
for 3D?

I hope this is just a matter of wording, though. Could you please
clarify?

Interesting thought. That is typical of the bijoux buglets that happen
when you try to clone an API. "Oh shit, we never tested it on THAT"...

As I understand it Wayland does 3D through Mesa, and Mesa has a
software renderer driver, so I don't know why hardware 3D support
would be a requirement (except if the software rendering is
considered unusably slow). Actually it now has several, since the
swrast driver was removed now they have softpipe, llvmpipe, and
swr.

Of course you'll need Mesa's software renderer drivers installed.
I guess they could be missing or optional on some distros.

I don't really know if my hardware box does 3D or not. I don't have the
proprietary driver for the AMD video card, so it either runs slower or
some features are off. But this way I don't have to bother installing
external drivers.

I can play Tux Racer. I can play flightgear. I understand those two
games use 3D.

However, vmware complains that "there is no 3D available from the host",
and thus, clients do not have 3D. I installed a virtual machine with
openSUSE Leap 16.0, which is wayland by default. There is no graphical
mode, it crashes. I forced "legacy" X mode, and it works fine.

IIRC there are various 3D shims that are more (or less) supported by the
underlying hardware and drivers...

Direct-X? OpenGL?

I have no idea. I don't remember how to test for those :-D

Everything works, though. Except 3D in vmware.

I'll ask chatgpt.

cer@Telcontar:~> glxinfo | grep -E "OpenGL vendor|OpenGL renderer|OpenGL version"

glxgears works.

Direct-X is a windows thing, check inside wine.

Seriously, long past time to look at alternatives
<https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/05/broadcom-sends-cease-and-desist-letters-to-subscription-less-vmware-users/>.

If you want an enterprise-class alternative, I have a client making

Over the years we went from Citrix to Xen and finally to KVM on HA
installations. It sort of amused me that all those super Windows Server
VMs were squatting on top of RHEL and KVM.
