Two years later when I got a better computer, complete with BASIC in ROM, I used it for some quick things, but I couldn't see the point generally. At the time, lots of articles said "learn BASIC first, it's easy". Which of course made other languages seem difficult for many. MIchael

So, as you can well appreciate, Fortran was a great improvement! Not actually. :) Though I admit I went from basic to fortran. I still recall with very little fondness the fortran message ... There are at least 00001 errors in this program. Yep, that, and a line number was as helpful as it got. Basic was easier because it died where the error was. Not fortran. :) I'd rather program in assembler than fortran ... but mileages vary. :)

It will compile FORTRAN and assemble assembler. BTW Tails is obscure, highly-specialized, and in an early stage of development. Not a good choice for a beginner. -- John Hasler jhasler@newsguy.com Dancing Horse Hill Elmwood, WI USA

It is part of GCC (GNU Compiler Collection). The collection includes C, C++, Fortran, Ada, Java, Objective C, and one or two other languages. Most Linux distributions include C and C++ as standard and the remainder have to downloaded. One thing which can be said for the Slackware distribution of Linux is it included all the GCC languages in it's development folder which is located on (CD) disk 2 of the distribution. Under the hood in the GCC, all the other languages are written in C. Thus gcc is the root for the other languages and is the reason it is part of most standard Linux distributions. Ross

Boxes of five DVD's are available locally for 3.something pounds (Verbatim, too, which I think is a reliable brand), so I'll try various things as suggested throughout the thread. E'en now Fedora is downloading. -- I think I am an Elephant, Behind another Elephant Behind /another/ Elephant who isn't really there.... A.A. Milne
