The Gooseberry Board is a small sized tablet PCBA computer which can be connected to a TV and/or an LVDS display. Based on a newer arm architecture, the board can run a multitude of different programs and Os’s ,most notably Android ICS and Ubuntu. These are currently the only two Os’s compatible with the board but many more can be expected to be supported soon such as Arch Linux. In terms of performance, the boards cpu, an allwinner a10 1.0Ghz Soc, is roughly 3x more powerful than the SOC shipped with the Pi. A Mali 400 gpu is also shipped with the board which is expected to have open source driver support in the near future. How much will it cost? The Gooseberry board is aimed to be sold at £40 with a charger. Please note, if you live outside of the EU, additional import taxes may apply. Has anyone tested this toy? My primary concern with both Raspberry Pi and Gooseberry is
their reliance on HDMI, which is known for its DRM-friendly
features, though Raspberry Pi also supports composite video,
while Gooseberry is claimed to support LVDS.
Raspberry Pi go as far as to label VGA as "end of life
technology" [1] (though I understand that the D-sub connector is
probably way too bulky to be used on such a small board), while
it's still widely used, and is pretty much the only widespread
"open" serial video standard. (FWIW, many 17" displays are
still VGA-only.)
Another issue is that both boards' GPU's are not yet well
supported by free software, though Gooseberry is seemingly
closer to have proper free software support:
