Oh, wrong on so many planes.

The Christian part of "the Bible" (which in English subsumes both Hebrew and
Aramaic texts inherited from the Jews, and Greek originals written beginning
c. 70CE about an Aramaic speaking individual from Judaea, using stories
borrowed from various West Asian inspired "mystery" religions) was *translated*
into Latin in the 4th Century CE *because that was the language of the populace
of western Europe*.

This translation was made not to *obscure* but to *illuminate* the scriptures
for people who could not read the original Greek.

The reason is likely simpler than that. Most books of the Bible are
very old, predating modern languages. So it could only have been
originally written down using a written language that existed at the
time of that writing. At the time, the choices might have been Latin
and/or Greek as languages, and given the impact the Romans had on the
proto religion that came to be known as Christanity, and the Romans
subsequent embrace of the same, having the bible books written in (or
translated into -- the more likely possibility) Latin because of the
Roman empire embrace of Christanity is much more likely the reason than
the "elites" wanting to be sure the mere peasants could not read it.

Of course, once Christanity spread across Europe, the elites
maintaining their elite status by keeping the bible in a language only
spoken by the "properly educated highbrows" clearly is why it remained
untranslated to other languages for so long.

Originally in Aramaic and Hebrew.

Not Latin.

And IIRC translated first into Greek.

And finally into the King James English version which is taken as The
One True Word Of God by an awful lot of people.

I have a catholic bible in 6 thick tomes from about 1850 which has one
column in latin, taken from the vulgata, and another column in Spanish.
Then the bottom half are foot notes.

The Douay-Rheims is a translation of the Vulgate. Pius XII suggested a new
translation from the Hebrew and Greek that resulted in the Jerusalem
Bible, which is the one I have. The first version was in French but that
spurred an English translation. The editors of the New Jerusalem Bible
thought the Jerusalem Bible was more a translation from French than the
original sources and tried again. Then there was the Revised New Jerusalem
Bible that was supposed to be more literal but had gender inclusive
language.

Will the real bible please stand up?

I think it predates version control. Definitely predates Linux.

It is amazing to me how far off-topic this group gets.

Have you considered taking it to misc.misc?

I took a look. 80 messages since 2022-07. They stopped on 2023-09 (most
came from google), then one on 2025-04.

The greatest trick ever played was the priest convincing
the people that the great sky god had intent. You know that
to be a good Satanist (old style) you had to be a faithful
Christian because otherwise the Black Mass and desecration
of the communion wafers would be pointless.

Since the devil never showed up when called upon
except in the person of the Priest celebrating the Black
Mass it provided plenty of evidence for lack of a
specific Satan.

They all try to blame it on the Devil.

Funny how religious people keep saying this god is true, those others
are false, yet they never argue over which devil is true and which
other ones are false ...

Tells you something about their core beliefs, doesn’t it ...

Loki is the true devil. I like a system where the Gods have their own
problems and the closest thing to a devil is a pain in the ass that's
sometimes helpful.

Given the theological novelties Billie Joe Fuddrucker of the Church of
Jesus Christ With Signs Following' can find, let alone Scofield, Darby,
and Co come up with it would have been better written in Klingon.

If you rewind far enough, the bible was translated to Greek since many
Jews could no longer read Hebrew. It lost out in the competition at the
Council of Trent but the Vetus Latina was one of many translations from
the Septuagint rather than the Hebrew original. Jerome translated from
Hebrew into Latin, creating the Vulgate, around 400.

Luther tried to follow Erasmus' Greek version that had been patched
together for several extant manuscripts but his Greek and Hebrew weren't
all that great.

The Textus Receptus followed the same path. Strangely, some references in
the KJV can only be found in the Septuagint.

Rapture me up, Jesus.

As a genealogist, the abandonment of Latin was the worst thing that
could have happened. We only needed a few words of one language to be
able to interpret old documents from anywhere. Now I have to deal not
only with English, but with German, Polish, Russian, French, etc. Add in
the sloppy versions of various handwriting styles over the centuries and
we have a royal mess.
