So, we know that most home routers ignore ICMP requests. I've tried every other protocol that traceroute offers and all I get back are * * * responses when trying to traceroute to a friend's home IP. Is there any way around this to, trick (for lack of a better word), a home router into responding to pings and traceroutes?

Alright, thanks. Absent a publicly accessible exploit hole (which, if it is a commerical router you can't quite be sure does not exist) reconfiguring it is going to be your best bet. You can try an nmap scan against it to see if there is anything it will respond to, if you really want to check.

The intermediate devices are the ones returning data (or not) for the corresponding intermediate hops. You won't reach your friend's home router until you get to the appropriate hop. If you're getting nothing at all then you need to consider whether one of your systems is dropping ICMP Time Exceeded packets (it shouldn't be). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Control_Message_Protocol#Time_exceeded Chris
