News today was some Brit being ARRESTED and
harassed by the authorities for MONTHS just
because, on a USA vacation, someone took a
picture of him skeet-shooting with an awful
   horrible GUN !!!

Of course if he'd been Islam it'd all be OK ...

So yea, why should USA sites entertain Brits ?

Heavy-barrel rifles (and pistols) can be VERY accurate.
Ruger used to sell a .22 auto with a serious bull barrel,
like 10 or 12 inches and nearly an inch wide. Perfect
accuracy even single-handed. Remember those for the
   Zombie Apocalypse :-)

I remember a few old rifles that seemed to resemble the
common single-shot shotguns of today. Lots of steel,
but usually .22 or something close.

One in .357 would be cool.

   Ah :

   Pretty close.

No thanks. Taurus came up with the idea and has several variations.

They were sort of a kid's gun. My father figured a 12 gauge was more
suitable. He had a side by side and my uncle had an over and under and
they would debate the merits. I think I was 14 before I got my own, a
Mossberg 12 gauge bolt action.

https://www.guns.com/news/2013/08/21/mossberg-bolt-action-shotguns-odd-
never-felt-so-good

Part of the attraction was some upstate NY counties were shotgun only for
deer hunting to limit collateral damage. Nimrods from NYC were notorious.
People were known to paint 'horse' or 'cow' on their livestock to aid in
species identification. The best solution was for the mighty hunter to
stay in a nice warm ginmill while a local filled his tag and strapped the
field dressed deer on the fender of the hunter's Cadillac for the
triumphal journey beck to civilization. It was a win-win.

Around here, you could go to prison for killing a bear. They are trying
to repopulate the mountains.

Absolutely true. Although the bears here are smaller.

AI Overview

Bear repopulation in Spain focuses on the
brown bear, with a population that has shown growth in areas such as the
Cantabrian Mountains (around 370 specimens) and the Pyrenees (almost 100
specimens in 2025). This increase is due to reintroduction and
monitoring programs that include genetic and damage monitoring,
consolidation of their range, and work on coexistence with humans.

How small? The male black bears (Ursus americanus americanus) around here
average around 100 kg. The grizzly males (Ursus arctos) are double that.
Your oso pardo would get tagged as a griz here.

I've seen most all of them all close-up at one time
   or another.

Even 'little' bears CAN do ya - though mostly they're
   kinda shy, mostly ...

Western blacks get quite large. Browns even more.
Griz may be a little bigger but it's the MEANER
   you've gotta worry about.

Met a guy who 'survived' a griz attack ... he
   wasn't pretty to look at.

Survival quiz : You run into a big unhappy bear on
a trail. What do you shoot FIRST, esp if your weapon
   is a bit undersized ? :-)

Had to DO that once long back ... passed the quiz .....

Grizzly bears are a protected species and if you kill one you'd better
claim self defense. There are two seasons for black bears, one in the
spring and one in the fall. There is also a two week archery season just
prior to the fall general season. Hunters with a bear tag have to take a
species identification test.

Many trailheads also have posters explaining the differences between the
two species. I've encountered quite a few black bears and they either run
away, tree, or ignore me. I try not to stumble over grizzlies. I may have
seen one but he was standing up facing me which makes identification
difficult. His fur was light brown but that's not reliable since some
black bears have a cinnamon colored coat.

Grizzly propagation is very controversial. Personally I'd prefer they stay
out of areas I frequent.

Some parts of USA they're trying to repopulate WOLVES ...
which are now coming into towns looking for yummy babies
   or whatever ......

Wolves are not Nice Doggies ... they're food-finding
   organized GANGS.

Florida's efforts to repopulate alligators and bears
have been seriously over-effective. Now there are hunts
as humans keep getting attacked more and more often.
Coyotes are also becoming an issue in numerous states.

And eastern DEER ... now very dangerous pests. Save
your state - shoot Bambi :-)

Here they are also repopulating wolves. They don't go into cities, but
they can kill sheep.

I have not yet heard of a wolf entering a human occupied villiage or
small town to look for a succulent and delicious baby but they do hit the
stock farms. The wolves were here first like the Native Americans and a
few sheep or even lame or sick cattle seem like rent to me. The use of
Herding Dogs can reduce these depredations as can hunters. The use
of poisoned bait carcasses is undesirable as it will hit other animals
which eat dead animals like vultures which are needed to keep the
environment clean.

The quota probably won't be filled but it's shaping up to be Humans 500,
Wolves 0. The cats have a higher score although the last fatal attack
around here was in '89.

Oh, a related gem from abroad :

https://japantoday.com/category/national/japan-insurer-offers-product-to-cover-lost-profits-due-to-bear-intrusions

I'd mentioned a sharp escalation in aggressive bear
encounters in Japan - with the mil even getting involved
  in dealing with them .......

But NOW you can actually buy BEAR INSURANCE ! :-)

They're hitting the stock farms BADLY in more
and more cases and also chomping through lots
of the (sometimes endangered) other wildlife.

Like any other animal they will breed very
quickly, invade everywhere, until the food
   supply finally runs out.
