I've used gnus with a number of newservers over the years, including
Eternal September at one point. I don't remember any issues setting up
ES.

In fact, the relevant part of my .gnus.el has been the same for a long
time, with only the FQDN of the newserver changing as I switched
providers.

There's some info on gnus there.

Or you could try something like this:

(setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.eternal-september.org"
                               (nntp-open-connection-function
                                nntp-open-tls-stream)
                               (nntp-port-number 563)
                               (nntp-address "news.eternal-september.org")))

I only have Thunderbird on the Ubuntu box. It's a snap and is 1.140. At
work I used KMail but iirc I had a problem configuring it for the Exchange
server. Thunderbird worked and is cross platform. I used it for newsgroups
but kept hitting strange format issues and moved to Pan.
