I used fglrx before, which caused other problems, so I went back to the
open source radeon.

Seems I won't have low-res on TTYs then...

Where "n" is a number, such as 769, I assume?  That number, as well as
"vga=normal", should give the OP what he wants, although it sounds like
it isn't doing so in his postings.

Yeah, VGA modes. I found this table.

The "vga=" is obsolete, replaced by "gfxpayload".

At least here it has no effect. Also I wanted text-mode 640x480 pixels
with 80x25 characters, not framebuffer.

I can offer a solution that works well here:

fbset -a -xres 1920 -yres 1080 #in rc.local
setfont -v iso02-12x22.psfu.gz #in rc.font

Season to taste for your distro's init..
