Since when did this happen? After an (X) update or something related?

I once had a bug in the GPU driver and X crashed when leaving tty7 (or
when I switch back from another tty), and was not able to restart
itself. So it seemed it was (cleanly) logged out.

Have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and also /var/log/syslog for some
clues.
